is it mean to tell a customer service rep of a bookstore that you won't buy a copy because it's slightly damaged? Or rather, what I said (in email) was, "I don't want to pay that much for a book that is less than brand new and damage-free."

Think that sounded bitchy? it was over $10 and had slight damage (meaning a little dirty cover and edges).

If it's sold as new, then I would definitely expect it to be spotless.

No, not bitchy at all. Quite the right approach. If it's not new and 'as new', then it should be sold at at full new price.

Judging from this thread, we are in no danger!

I am determined not to add anymore books to my "to read" list until I've reduced it by 10%.

An interesting dilemma. I'd tend to treat them like subscriptions - they don't really count.

Of course, in that case, perhaps I was wrong before in saying the pre-orders for items that weren't due out until after your chosen 'no buy' period were OK. It doesn't seem right to not count both cases. One or the other surely counts.

A la H2G2 .... you've just agreed and then disproven your agreement ... hence you should now disappear in a puff of logic!

I fell off the wagon yesterday, but I only spent $2.99. I will strengthen my resolve and move forward.

Yes, I didn't think it through properly, did I?

With all the authority vested in me as OP of this thread, I now make this ruling:

Henceforth, books purchased before the start of your no-buy period, whether by subscription or pre-orders do not count. But pre-orders made in the no-buy period do count, even if the book won't come out until after the no-buy period expires.

There. Those that like rules now have one to follow.

As for me, it's now been 39 days since I last bought an ebook! I nearly slipped up today, when someone pointed out that The Forever War, that excellent SF book by Joe Haldeman was now available as a DRM-free ePub for just $3.99 directly from the publisher. But I nobly resisted! No more books for me until at least 1st August.

I'm sorry, is the puff of logic trying to regain solidity, errr..., authority?

Sorry, if it's been 39 DAYS then you can no longer qualify for this thread, you are quite clearly not an addict at all and are here under false pretences...

Once an addict, always an addict. Just because I haven't bought one, I haven't stopped wanting to buy one. But if I bought one, that would lead to another...

Which explains why I have more ebooks to read now than I had at the start of the year!

Checking in to the AA thread here...

I've bought several books in the last few days, but since they were pbook-to-ebook conversion purchases, they don't count in my reckoning. I have FINALLY cleared off half-a-shelf's worth of space in one of my 6 bookcases (4 shelves each). This is a major achievement, I don't mind saying.

'Course, there's still a stack of cookbooks in the kitchen and a stack of craft books in the sewing room, but I'm going as fast as I can.
