Calibre is not installed on PC, as I have no use for it. Too bad, it could be a nice program. But the folder problem kills it for me.

Frustrating, because there is no alternative. So I went managing my books manually.
Realizing I would someday get to the point where the number of books would make manual management tedious, I began making my own software. It ease things a bit already, even in it's current alphaish buggy state.

Actually, you nailed it. About all he comes here for is to gripe because calibre doesn't allow hime to store books using his own folder/filename tree.

I actually like the way Calibre stores my books. I even like the way it looks! Nice, simple, no stupid frou frou graphics that are only designed to suck in the tech-challenged (who think cool graphics equal latest tech)

It certainly beats I Tunes hands down for usability. I even prefer Windows Media manager (the XP version) to Itunes for managing MP3s and podcasts. The newer version of WMP has regressed. I wish there was a "Calibre" for sound files,

My apologies - no insult intended nor deficiency implied - you misunderstood me. I just meant that maybe you think differently to other people about managing your book collection, and therefore have different requirements.

As is regularly pointed out in this forum, the calibre structure is not really intended for the user's direct use. Perhaps you could use the Save-to-Disc feature with an appropriate template to build your own preferred structure and then delete these saved books from your calibre library. Thus calibre would simply become your conversion staging post and you would then take over folder/file management at the OS level, (hooking in your own software if still needed).

Honestly i don't use iTunes for the kind of reason i don't use calibre. I hate software acting like they know how to sort my stuff better than I do. Additionally to "no linux version"

Yes, but if i have to do that again every time I add a book, i lost all advantage offered by the software.

Because calibre is otherwise a good software.

And tanks to the few people not telling someone to go away because she have a different opinion.

How on earth could any organizational program sort books into directories that would make every user happy?

Eowyn, I don't see why the "save to disk" function doesn't do what you want. Hold down shift. Highlight as many books as you want. "Save to disk". Tada. What is flawed about that?

Having to do it every time you add / modify a book.

By letting the user say how he wants to sort the book so everyone can configure to their liking. The export function does exactly that.

I'm just passing by, but I wanted to express a bit of support to EowynCarter.
I too was surprised at the beginning with calibre's structure (even asked/complained about it once), but at the end I accepted it and now I can see some logic in that flat, tag-oriented worldview - compared to the hierarchical filesystem induced habit I still have.
My solution, being hard disk space so affordable nowadays, is for each book I acquire 1st to save it to my hierarchical, n-folders deep, Library directory, and 2nd to add it to calibre - best of both worlds.
That being said, a lot of people likes to micromanage their data - no reason to be rude about it: I didnt see any trolling by EowynCarter.

You didn't see trolling because this might be the first thread you've seen him talk about this obsession of his. I'm guessing that this might be the 6th or more thread I've seen him obsess over this. Other threads have devolved to the point of moderators stepping in with a cease and desist order.

I don't mind him espousing his position and he certainly does not need to provide a convincing reason why he "needs it." This is his preferred method of dealing with his books and he is frustrated because if calibre made this one "small" item user configurable he would be able to jump into the deep end and join in the fun.

But as it is, hearing him get up on his soapbox for the umpteenth time is like hearing your kid say from the back seat "are we there yet?" The first few times you might empathize with your kid, but after a time it is just a irritant.

Personally I think it time EowynCarter stopped asking "are we there yet?"

I am not sure I understand this: so now you have two copies of the same book, and the one in the calibre library (if modified with new tags, etc) will be totally out of sync with the original one you kept in your other n-folder deep hierarchy; are you copying back the calibre version over to the original (overwriting) ?

I honestly mainly use Calibre for conversions or editing tags (or sometimes even adding a new custom cover image, etc) to make the book consistent of all my other books, and I am guessing I am not even using 1/10th of what Calibre is offering. Although obviously not the primary usage the app's creator had in mind, but I do wish there is a Calibre Lite just for conversion/editing purpose directly on the ebook file that won't try to mess with the library structure (importing, etc), as it does seem quite some users are using Calibre this way. However, I understand this is not the intended usage and certainly not a priority or even to the interest of most users and of its creators/developers, so for now, I am good with an extra step to manually copy (export) it over when the conversion/edits is done in Calibre. As much as I love Calibre, I do see in some of the recent threads a tendency among Calibre fans to discourage legit complaints from less experienced or more casual users. I don't know the whole story, but I miss the old days when even the most stupid questions of mine were received in a much more positive and encouraging way. I hope that kind of amiable atmosphere of the forum can be retained as the app becomes more and more matured and sophisticated.

There is a whole set of tools you can run from the command line that can be used on your files without the files being entered into the calibre library.
