I cannot, however, go for my afternoon run without wanting to puke. But we push on anyway.

Record heat today. Temps over 100 F with rising humidity => heat index values of 120 or more! These are deadly heat levels. No relief until Thursday (maybe).

Here too. We've got both a Heat Advisory and an Air Quality Alert today. And I've got to take my mother out to a doctor's appointment. Luckily it's a morning appointment, which I don't normally make for her. I'm not sure why I did this time -- maybe I had a premonition it was going to be this hot when I made the appt 3 months ago!

When I got up at 6 am today, it was already 80 F. Stepping onto the deck to fill the feeders, the humidity & heat just sucked the breath out of me. Nasty!

9.39" total of rain more than halfway through the year. We historically average over 53" annually. And still the forecast is for continued dry weather. It is seriously depressing to see trees beginning to die along the roads. But I read that the drought of 1918 in Texas was worse. It's hard to imagine, though.

It's also hard to imagine how people lived through the heat (even if not as high as this year's record breakers) 150 years ago, without air conditioning ..... or even electricity to drive a fan. Yowza! It's amazing the human race has continued to propagate.....

The hottest day of the year is what's been predicted for Tidewater, but so far it's been overcast for most of the morning giving us some reprieve from the heat. That's a good thing, because my son builds fences for a living, and he got sick yesterday from the heat. I told him he should stay home today, but he doesn't listen.

I agree. I talk to native Houstonians none of whom had A/C in the '60's. Why on earth would you live here and how did you survive? They just shrug their shoulders and wonder that themselves now.

I can still remember living in the Midwest as a child - with no A/C - we got to stay up late at night in hopes of some cool air entering the bedrooms - or the hot air from the day moving out. We had a couple of window & floor fans to move the air. Everyone was just used to sweating and staying out of the sun.

We didn't get a/c, in our cars or our home, until I was well into my teens. (I grew up here in this same area.) I honestly don't believe it was as hot then, at least not for such prolonged stretches. I don't remember even complaining that much about the heat. We had an attic fan that we ran at night, and that pulled cool air in through the windows. Now, though, there IS no cool air to be pulled in at night.

When I went for my walk at 6 a.m. this morning, it was 75F but with 85% humidity. If I go out much earlier I may as well just walk in the middle of the night!

Well, with all those A/Cs in cars and houses, the hot air has to got somewhere, right? The cooler you are inside, the hotter it gets outside. Also, I heard that heat waves are made worse in urban environments, because the asphalt absorbs the heat during the day and radiates it back during the night.

It was so humid here last night (97%, according to Weatherchannel.com) that it rained INSIDE Chris's truck. No, I don't know how that's possible but he swears it did it. I believe him, too...
I had the Tracker, with the top off, and i had to run the defroster to defog the windshield enough to see out of it. The condensation/fog was on the INSIDE of the windshield.

I just took an afternoon amble around the quad. When I got back and checked weather.com, it said it is 96 degrees with a heat index value of 104.

Here's what it's like in our neck of the woods:

Quote:
Chesapeake Heat Advisory
Statement as of 8:53 am EDT on July 12, 2011
A heat advisory remains in effect until 8 PM EDT this evening.
...Maximum forecast heat indices: 105 to 109 degrees expected due
to temperatures from the upper 90s to 100 and dewpoints in the
lower 70s.
The weather folks tell us the current temp in Chesapeake is 94° F. The wife and I just got back from shopping and I think they're off by about 31°. I'm pretty sure it's at least 125° outside, maybe as high as 150°.

...and the dumb cat wanted to go outside. I let Christian out, then waited several minutes to see if he would change his mind. Think I'll go back now and see if he's come to his senses yet.

It actually felt good in the early morning, then later with the cloud cover things weren't too bad, but the heat is making up for lost time now.
