The point is you posted irrelevant off-topic bullshit to push your own agenda. This topic is not about piracy in general, it's specifically about the publishers and internet providers ganging up on whomever they feel like depriving of bandwidth. And in the context of this forum should be related to ebooks.
Now, as I said either get on topic or shut up. I've already reported your post. Last edited by kennyc; 07-11-2011 at 08:56 PM. |

Two summers ago I was spending some time in Italy, in my 'summer' home. Over there, I use a local ISP, Fastweb. At some point, I got an email saying my access would be blocked because some local law agency had flagged me for downloading pornographic material involving underage 'actors' at a particular website. The email included the name of the website - and it was the library at the University of Oklahoma - the school I still work at and where I was getting my PhD at the time. After some digging, they eventual found that the so-called porn was a file containing NYSE trading data from the CRSP database. Go figure what the heck triggered it...
I just hope our US-based netcops are less incompetent. |

It extrapolates from a dollar figure presumed to be the amount of net loss to piracy but it doesn't state where that figure came from. It's just "IF piracy was responsible for $6billion in lost sales per second, this is how much tax revenue governments would lose out on and how many jobs would be lost." Looks to me like it was written specifically to make uneducated government types think SOMETHING MUST BE DONE!!!!!!! It's pointless speculating on secondary losses until you have a true figure to start from. Otherwise at best it's guesswork. For torrented ebooks you don't even have any way of knowing how many of them will be read, never mind not purchased. |

Once the MPAA started demanding 1.5 trillion dollars from Limewire, they lost all credibility. Thank God the presiding judge was firmly grounded in reality.

Let me do publicly what I have already done privately . I apologize to Elfmark for the tone of my response to her above. Having slept on it, it is now clear to me that while the CONTENT of my post was arguably correct, the tone most certainly was not . It was strident, intemperate and self-righteous. In plain language, I was being an asshole.
I also apologize to kennyc. My post to elfmark was entirely wrong in tone, and his response to that post was a correct response to my offensive conduct to elfmark, even if wrong as to whether it was relevant. As to the moderator, even though my post was relevant, I feel that my post violated the posting rules as to tone, and I apologize to you and the forum for that. |

As I said in PM: Thank you stonetools. While the original post certainly was in regard to ALL digital media the specific question/response above was with regard to ebooks and they really are different situations. The digital music fiasco is more or less over (IMO) and DRM/Restrictions/pricing has been resolved. I apologize for characterizing you as I did because I do see you have integrated into the community in several other discussions. This is what we need more of.
I certainly appreciate a rousing debate, but I also like to keep on target to the topic. Hopefully we can continue the discussion/debate without attacks and trolling. My apologies for my part in this. Did not Tolstoy say, "Happy families are all alike.....and boring...." |
