I'm off to set the breadmaker going for the morning loaf. Honey and walnut wholemeal bread this time. Yum.

As for me, I'm being grateful. We went to Chris's parents today for a "surprise" party for his birthday. The family party went well, and all was good until we came off one highway onto another on the way home, and the brake pedal went all the way to the floor and the brake dummy light came on. Chris got it to a safe exit and safely stopped, and took a look, discovering no brake fluid left and a leak in the brake lines. So his buddy Alan came and picked us and the truck up (he has access to a trailer). So we're all (all being us and Chris's Blazer) in one piece, no one got hurt, but man that is scary.
I guess I skipped your post last night (I blame it on the kitty worries), but I'm so glad you're both OK! That must have been really scary.

Ooh ooh, I thought of two Kitty names!! The first one is Onigiri (the Japanese dish), shortened to Oni for everyday use. And the other is Kouki, Japanese for chance (although someone who actually knows Japanese should confirm this for me. Stitchawl, where are you?). I thought that was appropriate, because it was chance that brought us together.

Still looking for other names though (I'm letting go of the whole traffic safety-related-name thing), I haven't decided anything yet

Onigiri is a Japanese riceball.
Typical fast food lunch available in every 7-Eleven. A triangle of rice with a little bit of something in the middle, tuna salad, shrimp salad, seaweed, all sorts of things... just about 1/2 a teaspoon full though, surrounded by rice. Often made with a piece of seaweed around the outside, or made with rice that's been mixed with seaweed flakes.

Oni... on the other hand....are hideous, gigantic creatures with sharp claws, wild hair, and two long horns growing from their heads! They are are creatures from Japanese folklore, variously translated as demons, devils, ogres or trolls. Sorry.

I'm always here when you need me, dear...

As a translation for 'chance,' I know 'guzen,' 'kikai,' and 'chansu,' but not the word you've suggested. That is NOT to say it doesn't have that meaning. There are many words for the same concepts but with subtle differences. My wife isn't home right now for me to consult with. "By chance," or "by accident" would be 'guzen-ni.'

Ah ... It's a good thing I don't live in Japan then I just thought 'Sushi' and 'Onigiri' would go well together as pet names. But Onigiri is too long to use every day. Hence Oni

I like Kikai too! Kouki would be better though, because when I pronounce it (which probably doesn't sound anything like someone from Japan pronouncing it), it sound like 'cookie' a type of food just like 'sushi' This is my source.

Well... you're in luck! My wife says that 'kouki' is another word for chance, in this case, chance meaning 'opportunity' rather than 'by accident.'

The pronunciation is Koh key rather than cook key.

I just took a look at the Kanji characters for this word. The first represents 'woman,' and the second one represents 'young student.' The last part represents 'many.'

Right then, kitty update ... She has a bladder infection, and needs to get antibiotics. Because of this, she can't get vacinated in 2 weeks, because she has to take them for 3 weeks ... I should see an improvement in 5 days. If not, I have to collect a urine sample (the vet couldn't do it) and go back for a more thorough investigation. Fingers crossed everyone!

I decided to name her Onigiri, and shorten it to Oni. The fact that's actually demon makes it even more fun. It sounds cute, but in fact she's a little devil in disguise But thank you for all the language help Stitchawl!

I'm still not giving you that photo you want so badly though

Good luck with Oni! That's the trouble with strays - you have no idea where they've been and what bugs they carry. My Sammy cat carried a respiratory virus into the house, but it cleared up, and everyone survived. Good thing you decided not to wait until Wednesday to go to the vet. Kittens have little energy reserves to fight illnesses, so all problems should be taken seriously! You are a good cat mom!

My sister and I went to Amsterdam today to see the Dick Bruna (author of Miffy) exhibition in the Rijksmuseum. What a disappointment! The museum has been renovating for years now and only have one wing open to public and a "core" collection to show to visitors. IMHO it's more the core of the core collection: they only show the middle section of the Night Watch. The exhibition about Dick Bruna was only one small room with a couple of his posters and how he develops his covers and Miffy drawings. You can also listen to an interview but that was just the standard stuff most Dutch people already know about him. I'm glad I got a Museumcard and didn't have to pay €12,50 for it! The renovations are done in 2013 so I advice people to wait until the reopen fully before visiting.

The day wasn't a complete waste, we walked to the museum from the station and it was a really nice walk. On the way back we shopped, I got some stuff at Lush and some dvd's (Falcone and Romanzo Criminale the tv series). We had a great lunch on Spui.

Now I'm tired and I'm going to relax, watch a couple of Fringe season 2 episodes and read a bit. Tomorrow, after sleeping late I'm going to reinstall my desktop, not looking forward to that!

Pretty! I trust these are less radioactive than the plates from about 1950's, with the same name (i think?) which used sometime radioactive to achieve their luster. Or so I recall......

LOL let's hope so, Deb. I never heard that story, so don't know, but will do some research. At any rate, I'm pretty sure they don't get the pretty red glaze by using

Spoiler:
dead bodies in the kiln during firing

as in The Cat Who Saw Red by Lilian Jackson Braun.

ETA: Ok, found what you were thinking of...this isn't the vintage stuff, it's the new stuff made after 1986. It seems that most red glazes during the 50's were radioactive because they used uranium in the firing process. However, according to the site I found, the levels are so low even in the vintage stuff that most collectors don't worry about it. At any rate, I plan on sticking with the modern (post 1986) pieces.

I try to be I would go to the doctor if I had gotten more sick, so it's only logical to take her to the vet when I notice she's getting worse. She also has an infected wound on one of her legs, Sushi probably bit her a little too hard and punctured her flesh. So I have to take care of that as well (pushing all the pus out every day ) which really hurts her. Poor thing. It breaks my heart a little.

Thanks for the advice, maybe I'll go visit in 2013 . I spent a week-end in Amsterdam ages ago and I liked the Rijksmuseum, though the real revelation was the Van Gogh museum. When we came back on the coach, my friend and I were probably the only ones who hadn't tried to buy weed while there. People came back with lots of things that were supposed to be weed but often turned out to be something else.
