If you like this you'll like "World Without End". It's a sequel but just covers a single generation. I read it last month and really enjoyed it.

I just finished Jack Whyte's "Standard of Honor". If you like historical fiction and are interested in the time period around the Crusades I would highly recommend it. This is book 2 of a planned Trilogy on the Knights Templar and I can't wait for the third book.

I really enjoyed his previous books where he took the King Arthur legend and tried to set it in history. Unfortunately they're not don't seem to be available as ebooks.

A superb book; I completely agree with you.

"Not being in the US" doesn't mean that you can't get any books. There are 10s of thousands of out of copyright books, many of them classics (over 1000 of which can be downloaded free from this site, hand-formatted for the Sony Reader.

For commercial e-Books you can (where legal) buy any Microsoft Reader book, trivially remove the DRM, and convert to Sony Reader format with free tools.

Finally, if you send "Leaping Gnome" a PM, he will happily buy Sony eBook store vouchers for you (pay him by PayPal) which can be used by anybody, regardless of their location.

So what's with the "I can't get any books" stuff?

I'm currently reading Middlesex, a Pulitzer novel that I purchased from Sony just before I left the U.S.

Middlesex is an interesting story, but if you like your stories linear in development, then I don't think you'd find this novel to your liking. For me, however, I like the narrator's way of telling the story, as (s)he weaves the narrative strands together.

But I also just finished reading one of the hard-boiled mysteries that I recently posted. I'm about to start another one - but not certain which one - and also continue my reading of Middlesex.

I finished Cormac Mcarthy's "The Road" about a month ago now and so I am never ever ever going to read another book as long as I live.

Kidding.

I'm actally back to reading Moby Dick and I'm about three quarters through. It really IS turning out to be one of my favorite books ever, even with all the pedestrian dissertations on whales and whaling.

I took a break from Moby Dick to read The Road because Moby had become kind of tiring but, after Cormac drug me down The Road, I was eager to get back to all the wonders of cetology.

I really like Ahab's instructions for cooking a whale steak. "Hold the steak in one hand, and show a live coal to it with the other; that done, dish it! Ever since I read that I have had a craving for sushi.

I'm reading Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts, but in paper from the library, because it wasn't available as an ebook. I just finished Disgrace by J. M. Coetzee, again, in paper, same reason. Both are assigned reading for a course I'm taking, so I don't have the choice to just read something available as an ebook instead.

On my Kindle, I'm currently reading the second book in the Deeds of Paksenarrion trilogy by Elizabeth Moon. I downloaded the first book, Sheepfarmer's Daughter as a free book from the Baen library. Read it, liked it, then went back to buy the trilogy. Almost finished with Divided Allegiance and will take a temporary break from eBooks to catch up with a couple of paper-back swaps that I've promised.

Since receiving the Kindle in mid-February, I've read the following eBooks:
  • Stone Cold by David Baldacci
  • Sheepfarmer's Daughter by Elizabeth Moon
  • Snow Ball by April Hamilton
  • Liaden Unibus I by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller
  • Maelstrom by Elizabeth Ann Scarborough and Anne McCaffrey
  • Deluge by Elizabeth Ann Scarborough and Anne McCaffrey

Only one of those was a free download, and I later bought the book in the trilogy. I've purchased Steve Jordan's complete bundle, and I have my eyes on several other books, not to mention the 50 or so that I've downloaded that I want to get to -- Anthony Trollope in particular.

But, I do need to read a couple of paperbacks and get them mailed off to my swapping pals. Since I get such a kick out of swapping books, I don't think I'll ever go totally to the eBook format. I think I own enough paper books now to keep myself in fresh reading matter (those still unread and what I can trade them for) for many years. My Kindle is simply going to make it much easier for me to pack a variety of books for a long trip without having to cope with the weight of the paper.

I've just started Trollope's 'The Duke's Children', posted here by Strether - to whom many thanks

When I'm looking round for something to read, I often think Trollope might be a bit dry for the mood I'm in; but if I actually start on one, I wonder why I'd ever bother reading anything else. He's one of those authors where the hardest part is picking up the book in the first place; after that it's pure delight .
