How ill they handle it? Here you are:

Greetings from Amazon.com.

I am sorry to hear about your damaged Kindle. At this time, we do not
have any repair options available for you. While I am not aware of
any specific plans for such a service, I have passed your interest
along to the Kindle Team for their consideration.

Thank you for shopping at Amazon.com.

So it's disposable!

The way I read the message is like this:

Greetings from Amazon.com

We have bad service, so purchase other brands otherwise we'll send you the same message again once you've broken your second one.

Thank you for shopping at Amazon.com

You've just talked to the wrong person, message someone else until one of them knows of an existing plan.

Likely that any major repairs would be quite expensive. I've seen some repair estimates for the Sony readers ( screens for example) and you just as well buy a new reader. Amazon may be thinking you break it, you buy a new one. If its a warranty thing, they send you a new one. I'm not saying this is good, just that this may be the way it is

I think you might be on the right track.
And that's why his next one shouldn't be another Kindle.

The Kindle gets me the New York Times, that is very addictive as I live overseas.

I'm quite shocked to hear that there's no repair service available. All the other eInk readers I know of (Sony, CyBook, iLiad) can be repaired. That would definitely make me think twice about buying a Kindle, even if I were able to do so .

Maybe I am too naive but I am totally shocked by that response from Amazon.

In fact I just cannot believe they will not even look at it (what if it was just that a wire was loose?)

I don't believe they support product outside the USA in any event.

But to not have any repair service is silly. If it is not the screen that's broken, it should be cheaper to get it fixed then to buy a new one.

And even if it is the screen, or associated electronics, it can still be replaced at a reasonable price. There was someone on the Gen3 forum recently who broke the screen backplane and Bookeen quoted them €80 to fix it. That's about a quarter the price of buying a new machine.

To be fair, Amazon has been sending out replacements for broken Kindles with very little fuss. Far less fuss than Sony if I read phugger's saga correctly. I think they were just anticipating replacing broken units, not somebody being honest and fessing up to breaking it themselves. I hope they do add repair services, though. I think this is one of those areas in which not being an experienced hardware manufacturer hurts them.

You mean the defective Kindles?
I think we should take that service for granted considering it's their manufacturing responsibility in the first place and we did spend $400USD on it.

The poster said there isn't any repairing services, and I want to see if anyone else can confirm that. Don't forget our only source is just that one email.

Why not ask Amazon directly.

Dear Amazon
I have a Kindle and if I break it and invalidate the warranty, can I send it in to be repaired at a lower cost then to buy another new Kindle?
Sincerely,
Kindle owner

I would if I were concerned about cost. Which I am not.

In any case, a new is on order. I wonder what the lag time is nowadays.
