I would also highly recommend Ellis Peters' Brother Cadfael series along with the works of Agatha Christie.

When reading Christie's Poirot stories you should keep in mind that the character ages in real time. I don't think they need to be read in strict order, but understanding the character's aging is important.

Although her canon is much smaller, I would recommend the six Inspector Alan Grant mysteries by Josephine Tey.

The Lord Peter Whimsey books are also good and should be read in order.

Check out The Instance of the Fingerpost, by Ian Pears.

Also The Name of the Rose, Umberto Eco.

Is that really any good? The only thing I've tried to read by Eco was Foucault's Pendulum. I was less then impressed, but I've heard that wasn't one of his better books.

Well, I kinda hate to suggest anything, since hardly anyone likes what I like, and these aren't Public Domain but do involve characters/mysteries in Victorian England. (And I'm a 'buddy story' fan, so I'm probably not looking for what everyone else is.)

I'm on book two of the "Barker and Llewellyn" series by Will Thomas, starting with "Some Danger Involved" and am enjoying it a lot. Second book is more 'spy' than mystery, but that's okay. I'm enjoying it. Love the characters so far.

And I just finished a series I enjoyed the James McCreet series with "Williamson and Dyson" with the first book being "The Incendiary's Trail". I think the series is listed as "Albert Newsome Series" in places, but ignore that. I don't know why the publishers list him as a main character in the series when he's not. He's more a PITA character that gets in the way of the good guys than a good guy himself. Giving him first mention just tells me they don't read their own books.

The Brother Cadfael series was wonderful.

The Rivals of Sherlock Holmes

In 1983 Penguin published an interesting omnibus volume The Penguin Complete Rivals of Sherlock Holmes. It comprises The Rivals of Sherlock Holmes, More Rivals of Sherlock Holmes, and Further Rivals of Sherlock Holmes. Altogether you get over a thousand pages of detective stories by writers who were contemporaneous with Doyle. they include figures such as Guy Boothby, L.T. Meade (the daughter of an Irish Rector}, Ernest Bramah, Baroness Orczy, and Arthur Morrison.

The collection is very entertaining and all of the authors are now in the public domain so that one can do a bit of further research if so inclined. I bought my copy when it was first issued and I don't know if there is any e-book version available. I do know that Gutenberg {check out the "Detective Fiction" Bookshelf} and Many Books do carry these authors {and many others}.

Oooh! I am going to search for that book, that sounds awesome! I am hoping my favorite online bookstore (BetterWorldBooks) will have a copy.

It's the only one of his with which I'm familiar. It's rich and meaty. Definitely one that demands your full attention, but it's not dry. Takes some effort in the beginning, but then gets rolling nicely. Fans of his other works tell me that this is The One to read; his least academic and most yarn-like novel. Latin phrases throughout the work are untranslated, which some find an annoyance.

And a quick check through MR's list of books online reveals that of the authors in fantasyfan's list, all are available except Guy Boothby.

I also enjoy the Sherlock Holmes stories.

I can recommend "The Extraordinary Adventures of Arsene Lupin, Gentleman-Burglar" written by Maurice Leblanc. You can get that for free at Gutenberg and I assume here at MR too. Arsene Lupin can be considered as a counterpart to Sherlock Holmes, he is a "thief", however he is a gentleman with manner at the same time. Sherlock Holmes even appears in the books, where they are competing against each other.

I JUST found these books here on MR and am already flying through the first one. I LOVE Arsene Lupin, I find him really witty and entertaining. The fact that he announces his burglaries is hilarious to me. Thanks for the heads up!

The Red House Mystery by A. A. Milne is one of the earliest English parlor mysteries. Kind of a prototype of Agatha Christie. I guess you would call it a cozy, at any rate it's a good read.

You can find it through Gutenberg.
