I don't have many pairs of shoes, but I am thinking about getting a proper pair of black brogues again, to go with my kilt.

Apart from cost, the main thing holding me back is that I hate shopping for shoes. I have quite wide feet, and finding something that fits properly usually takes quite a while.

I was always under the impression that English shoes were of the finest quality... (Not counting the Tessco sorts in that.) Have you considered custom made shoes? There is a German Shoemeister in Kobe (about 70km from me) that makes the foot bed orthotic and builds the shoe around that. Cost is about the price of three normal pair but the comfort and durability almost make it worthwhile!

I have a 13 year old black sweater that I still wear and that still looks like new. I'm sure that I have more old clothing that I still wear, but I can't think of anything at the moment.

I have considered custom made shoes, but I don't really need them. I can find very good 'standard' shoes that fit — it just takes a few hours.

You should search, or ask the staff for "wide fit" shoes in that case.

It's usual in UK shoe shops to always be served by a member of staff. You browse the shoes on display, and then get a member of staff to fetch your size from the stock room. They'll often recommend which makes fit your foot better than others.

But it does all take time. And I don't like shopping.

Two years ago I finally bought a pair for myself and my beau. I figured that there had to be something to them, so I thought I'd give them a try as around-the-house shoes. I knew the bottoms were nonslip so I got them for walking from the house to the grill, and if we accidentally forget to take them off, the wet soles won't slip on the shiny tile floors.

I used them for any kind of house cleaning, mopping the floors, etc. when I have to worry about slipping and I wear them on the StairMaster. Since I have a StairMonster uh, err... Master at home, I just need cushion under the balls of my feet, and wearing loose Crocs keep my feet cool. Outside of that, I never wear them out, like to the store. I may bring them to the beach, but that's about it. I never look at anyone funny when they wear them, but for some reason, I feel weird, like I'm wearing my slippers out.

Beppe, I may have to go with your family on this one. You do live in the shoe capital of the world. Crocs should be banned from entering your borders!

I bet there wasn't a blister amongst them! my all time favorite flips are Chacos. Their arch support can't be beat. I have purchased over 20 pair since discovering them 5 years ago. Sadly, I always have to buy them online. I've only seen them once in my area, and it was at the tiniest store, that I barely noticed, few blocks from where I live.

I thought about you the other day! I was shopping in my favorite salvage store, and they had some stock from an outdoor store, including quite a few Chacos. I tried two different pair on -- but my foot wouldn't go in! ??? I have an average width foot, but a very high arch. Maybe that was the problem? Are they very narrow? Anyway, no Chacos for me, but I did get a great pair of Keen sandals which have hardly been off my feet since then!

Yeah, nemo profeta in patria. At least I learned that on shoes, color of socks and other frivolities I leave my women in full charge. Let's say that I trust their tastes, appreciate their favors and fear their coruscated brows.

The last one, 4, looks at me and says: Dad, actually it is Daddy, you are such a disordered mess. Let me pick this up for you. And she does it. My joy.

They do run a little tight, but if you're average width that should be okay. Were they flips or sports sandals like this:
