Unhappy No items in Library

My Nook is all of a sudden given me heartache. After the attempted download of a 25MB epub document and an abrupt disconnect from my computer the Nook is no longer displaying any books in my library.

After the disconnect I get the standard "Checking for New Content" message which continues for hours. Cancelling does not help.

Interestingly, the files are still there. If I reconnect to my computer I can see them AND, If I go to "last read" it will open the book, but noting is shown. The listing say simply "No Items."

All the Shelves are also greyed out, but I tried creating a new shelf and all my books reappeared. Unfortunately, a reboot took it back to the "No items" display.

I'm at a lost what to do. Has anyone seen this or have an idea how to correct? I'm thinking taking it back to factory options might be my only option, but I'm not confident that will change things.

Needless to say, I'm desperate.

Did you give the Nook a full power cycle / reboot?

My suggestion would be to remove the 25 mb epub first, by connecting the nook to your computer and manually deleting the file from "My documents" (or if it's a B&N book, archive it on your B&N nook library on the B&N website. Then reboot. If everything works then, you will know which file caused the problem and how to get your other content back in case of another crash. You can then try to re-download the large file and see if it works upon retry.

It is possible the very large file on your nook got corrupted during the failed download which can definitely cause library problems.

I believe I tried that, but will check. Indications were the file never made it to the Nook.

One other key point which probably is relevant based on your comment. The book/manual was initially in pdf format and I converted it to epub using Calibre. There were about 5 manuals total in the set and that was the only one that caused any hiccup. Calibre actually took over 5 hrs to convert which should have been my first clue there was going to be a problem.

The intial attempt to transfer the doc to the Nook also hung Calibre. Communications between the Nook and Calibre was hung; communications between my PC (usb) and the Nook was also hung. A state I'd never seen a usb device in before. I rebooted everything to get them back into a sane state.

I did rebuild the epub and do a manual transfer, but will check to see if the doc is actually on the device now.

Thanks for the suggestion

That appears to have been the problem. After deleteing the file I powered the Nook off before hopping on a plane. I've powered it back on and after seeing a brief "checking for new content" all my books are there.

Trying to read the file in Calibre told me the there is something wrong with it. After watching Calibre try to load the file for 10 minutes I shut it down. [So much for me trying to standardize on epub]

Also, I left the pdf version on the device and it works fine. So it was the epub.

Thanks for your help

My experience with Calibre is that the pdf->epub conversion may fail horribly.

I'm glad you were able to get your device back up!

I've never had that problem before. Calibre has always worked like a charm.

In almost 3 years of using it this was the first real problem I've had. I know what to look for though and will be a lot more careful.

Thanks again
