I read mine too and just bought two new ones.

Statistics: 55 books bought since August 2010 = 5 books per month
38 books read and 17 unread/TBR

So you have nearly five month's supply of ebooks in your TBR pile — nearly enough to last you into 2011. I think you should probably aim to get that down to two to three months supply, say under 10, before buying more ebooks.

Otherwise you'll quickly find yourself in my position, with two years or more reading material in your TBR pile.

Ideally I want to get my TBR pile down to just over a month's supply — no more than 20 books or so. But that's not likely to happen until 2014 at the earliest.

A month's supply?

I'd be panicking if that's all I had. Not rational, I'm sure, but nonetheless...

Bear in mind that if I eventually get to that happy state, I'd be back to buying, as a matter of course, three or four ebooks by various subscriptions, along with at least the four Baen Books from their current month, so I'd only need to find another 10 to 12 from freebies and recommendations from others to be well supplied.

But it's an interesting question. How long a TBR list do people want to have? None? A Week? A Month? A Year? A Lifetime?

Nah, this is what I bought and what I read of the bought ones. I read more per month than five books. A whole lot more, you have to triple that number

I'm a hoarder, so it's a tough question. I think I need at least a 50-book TBR with the understanding that at least 20 of those may be DNF. (You just never know with new books.) And, of course, my back library of at least 100 titles that I could read again in a pinch.

The problem is my reading rate varies wildly depending on circumstances. I CAN read 2-3 books in a day, but I will go through dry spells where Real Life intervenes. My actual rate in practice is probably closer to 3-4 books a week. 50 books would be a 12-week (3 month) supply at that rate.

Interesting, it would also be a 25-day / 1 month supply at my hypothetical don't-have-anything-else-going-on rate. So maybe I CAN handle a 1-month-sized TBR list. However, if I was going at that rate, I'd be getting very nervous and wanting to expand the list PRONTO.

I wouldn't want only a month's supply of books on my TBR list! What if I don't like to finish the book I'm currently reading? Nor the next one? I currently have 3 books I started, but haven't finished yet, on my Sony. I have also read a few "inbetween" books while reading the entire Pern collection.

And this thread is working counter productive in my case... Every time I see the title popping up, I want to go to either bol.com or amazon.com...

Oh, I'm the same way! If you tracked my buying habits, you'd see that I've bought more eBooks (a) since this thread started in general and (b) right after I've visited it in particular.

I love it. It's like an AA meeting where people keep saying "I haven't drunk anything this week......... except this exceptional Scotch" and we all start surreptitiously jotting down the brand name. I love it.

Then again, for me at least, acquiring eBooks is a relatively harmless addiction. Husband was telling me about some Steam video game sale last week (month?) and saying he might get some under-$5 titles for himself but angsting a bit over the money aspect. I was all, "Honey, have you SEEN my eBook collection? Be my guest!"

After my post, I searched for alternative history writers and marked a few down. Now I need to find them!

Oh, so it's ebook readers and paperbooks that you're having problems with. The solution for you must surely be to abandon this thread and go and buy lots of ebooks instead!

And I never thought I'd be giving anyone in this thread that advice.

Sorry, my bad! I wanted to say I still buy ebooks, where I wanted to use the reader to read free classics with it.
