Pearl eInk screen, but that turned out to be a bit of a disappointment as I don't see where it's reall that much of an improvement over my PRS505 or WiFi...

Web browser & definite download support: Primarily to access my Calibre stuff w/o having to hookup to the PC and a few times when I'd like to do a q&d web lookup w/o attempting to use a phone or pulling out the tablet.

Price.

It was a close call though between Nook Simple Touch and this, as the Nook can be hacked every which way to Sunday, and there are quite a few Android apps that'd be useable and nice to have on an eink device. The downer was more $$$ and the browser is a hack ATM and the ones that run on a hacked Nook are FAR from my preferred.

Weight: Huh? Lighter?! Feels twice as heavy to me as my WiFi, but that's OK because I can already tell that the batt runtime on the Touch is WAY better than the WiFi, plus it's just so much speedier. Still undecided about the UI modifications for "touch"...

Broadest range of formats supported at the price point, excellent side-load capabilities, and Kobo supporting the efforts of Calibre devs to ensure their devices work with that software!

Apple policies

1) When recently synching or updating the OS I don't recall which, I was told I would have to accept new terms of conditions before proceeding. This was not the first time either with Apple. You buy a product under one set of conditions and then you are forced to sign changes to terms and conditions in order to maintain support for a product. And I don't believe changes to the TOCs are made for the benefit of customers.

2) Apple's current attempt to require other vendors to either delete their buy options/buttons (Kobo, Amazon, B&N etc.) or route through iStores with Apple receiving a significant cut of the profits.

I have been an Apple customer for many years - but no more.

Now the good stuff

Kobo's touchscreen, simple operation, small footprint yet generous reading screen, epub support, ability to read books bought through multiple vendors, Kobo bookstore and Kobo support as witnessed by reading posts in this forum.

So, started with growing frustration with Apple policies that appeared to me to have little or no concern for their customers but ended with the purchase of a new product I'm much happier with.

I've been deciding between the new Kobo Touch and the new BN Touch. I ordered the Kobo.

This is one reason I picked the Kobo. They've done an excellent job fixing bugs and adding useful features.

I also liked that Kobo's memory doesn't reserve and hide memory for store bought content like the BN Touch does. Yea I'm sure you can root it and shrink that partition but I shouldn't have to.

I also like having a basic web browser available even though I don't have wifi (yet) in my house. BN's Touch does have one but its not advertised and crashy (probably why its not advertised).

The lack of dedicated page turning buttons doesn't mean much to me. Tapping the screen or a button is all the same to me. And not having dictionary support for sideloaded epubs in the current firmware isn't a deal breaker for me either.

Are you keeping both the Kobo and the Nook STR? If so, why? Also, since you are very objective and highly respected here, which one do you prefer, and why (if you could only keep one, which would you choose)?

Does the Kobo have the same ghosting problem as the Nook ST? I don't like how the page gradually degrades on the Nook until the 6th page flash (I noticed this immediately when I played with one at B&N). I know the new Kobo firmware lets you set the page refresh for each page. Does that fix the issue, and clear any artifacts?

Sorry for all of the questions! You're the first that I have seen that own both.

For some reason, I didn't like the Nook ST even though I was convinced that I would (I love my Nook Classic). But, for some reason, the Kobo has really caught my attention (great design) even though I hated the original Kobo.

I just returned a Sony 950 to Best Buy Tuesday and used those funds to buy a Kobo Touch at my local Borders yesterday. While I mostly loved the 950, including its larger screen size and 2 page mode in landscape, I decided to return it for the Kobo. The primary reasons were the new Kobo is $70 cheaper, and for how responsive the developers are on the forums. Plus the frequent firmware updates. I thought I would be interested in the Nook Touch, but after playing with one in store, I lost interest. Didn't really like the look or form factor, and I thought the text got ragged after each page turn (until the full page refresh occurs). Once firmware 1.9.5 came out adding more font sizes, margin & line spacing, and the ability to add more fonts..I was sold.

So far I like it..just wish there some M-Edge covers that fit the new Kobo, so I can use my M-Edge Touch booklight.

Returning the 950 was probably a good decision since Sony rarely updates firmware, rarely listens to customers, and seems to have an issue with USA market/customers. The Sony firmware is certainly stable and elegant, but the KT already surpasses it in text formatting capabilites.

I had a little ghosting on my Kobo Wi Fi which gradually disappeared as I turned pages. I really love the device though (other than the fact that the screen hasn't been durable).

I have 2 Kobo Wifi readers bought kobo touch first day it was available to try in local Borders 1 July. After playing with demo unit in store. I like touch screen, faster page turns and not dealing with rubber covered switch. Appreciate Kobo updates and looking forward to further updates. Kobo updates were large part of my buying decision.

I only considered Nook ST to play with android apps. Might buy one just for that anyway.
