2 lines in one toc entry

the text looks like this:

1.

A Beginning

how can i get a toc to display this:

1. A Beginning

without having to reformat the text in the book.

also:

the text looks like this:

Part IV.
It Continues

Chapter 13.
A possible Answer

how can i get a toc to display this:

Part IV. It Continues
Chapter 13. A Possible Answer

and not translate to mobi with a chapter break between the two?

i've been googling for these answers for the past 2 hours.

Try:
<h2>Part IV.<br />It Continues</h2>
<h3>Chapter 13.<br />A possible Answer</h3>
<h4>1.<br />A Beginning</h3>
If you want you can set the hierarchy based on the value of "<h>".

You could also try:

<h3 title="Chapter 13. Blah, Blah, Blah">Chapter 13.</h3>

<p class="subheading">Blah, Blah, Blah</p>

Then it doesn't matter what you put between the heading tags as what is recorded as the title will be used for the TOC.

So if you have a multi-line heading that uses different formatting for the chapter number and the rest (e.g. different font sizes, etc) you can have a bit more control on the layout. At least that's what I've found.

I've been thinking about this question.

When an ePub is translated to MOBI, at least by Kindlegen, the chapter breaks appear in the same locatons. Since I don't use Calibre to covert to MOBI, I cant speak to it.

ah, so it may be the conversion engine used by calibre that's at fault.

Check the formatting options in calibre.

Hi Alan-
If you have CSS statements like "page-break-before:always;", you have to be careful where you put them. If they are in the definition of a header, then two <h> together can cause the double page you are talking about.(not in all epub readers!)
