Google Books & the Kindle?

I am interested in reading this book on my Kindle:

http://books.google.com/books?id=swG-jddpVUsC

I have a paper copy of it that I purchased a few years ago at a used book store or library book sale, but can't ever seem to bring myself to read it because, well, it's paper! I read the first few pages, and really enjoyed it, so I do want to finish it. So, I've been looking for an ebook copy and finally stumbled across the version on Google Books. That'd be nice and all, but reading on my laptop would be even worse than reading the pbook! :-)

So... does anybody know... if I were to buy the Google books copy, would I be able to download an unencumbered epub file that I could convert w/ Calibre? [does Google indicate prior to purchase which are downloadable and drm free? I don't see it] (Perhaps by doing the offline sync w/ the google books app on my phone) Short of that, does anybody know of a Kindle friendly version being sold anywhere?

I've even considered scanning it and saving it as images in a huge PDF, but that just seems like way too much work, and would probably be unpleasant as well.

Thanks!

Google eBooks is compatible with any dedicated ebook reader that supports the Adobe eBook platform, including the Barnes & Noble Nook™ and Reader™ from Sony. With just a few steps, you can start reading Google eBooks on the go.

Buy the Google ebook, strip the DRM, and read away?

I mistakenly bought Bill Bryce's Walk in the Woods from Google without realizing I wouldn't be able to just download it. Apparently there are tools out there that will GET it for you, but it seems a PITA to do.

I'll probably just re-buy the books somewhere that I can download un-encumber and read on any of my devices. And never buy a book from Google Books again (unless they clean up their act ... um ... er....cloud).

That looks like a cut and paste from the TM symbols... does it say that ALL of their books can be downloaded as an ADE ePub? I thought that a lot were online only.

No. It certainly was not the case with the one and only I purchased from them.

.....unless someone wants to explain to me what I'm doing wrong.

Some can't be downloaded AFAIK. If you look at the books page in their ebook store (as opposed to the Google books page linked above) it will tell you some things about what's available. In this case both Flowing text and Scanned pages are available and it says it's Nook/Sony compatible which would mean some kind of ADE based download (ePub or PDF) AFAIK.

eBook Store page...

and the one I bought says the same:

I do see some instructions under "Help with your devices and formats" that might help. I has not seen that before as I bought this book directly from my Xoom.

Actually it does look like I can download the DRM'd version to my PC. I'll try that when I get home.

Perfect! I was able to download to ADE and then my 'usual' processing.

To the OP, not sure if you can tell beforehand, but there are instructions here about downloading to 'other devices' http://books.google.com/support/bin/...&answer=179863

Thanks to the OP and to mr oak!

Will the promised Kindle Library Lending feature announced by Amazon in late April allow one to buy books from the Google store that use the Adobe eBook Platform? Or are these different things?
