What? We can't text while riding a motorcycle?

Meanwhile, I see such an increase in Japanese road rage over the past 20 years. It used to be that Japanese drivers were the most polite I'd even witnessed. Not so any more.

As a motorcyclist I'm permitted to split lanes while driving here. There are even specifically set out bike lanes on major roads. But at least once or twice a week I see car drivers getting so angry at being stuck in traffic jams that they pull over to block the bike lanes so the bikes can't get passed. And on the open road, if a motorcycle passes them, they will speed up to get back in front of the bike, regardless of the speed, cutting off the bike to do so!

We have enough difficulties and dangers on the road with people pulling out of driveways in front of us, turning in front of us across traffic, oil spills on the roads, etc. We don't need angry drivers making it more dangerous!

Right now I am memorizing a route map. I will take the driving test for a Japanese car license tomorrow morning and I have to have the test route memorized. It's quite a complex test ground, and I'll be required to execute all the various problems in the correct order. If I take a wrong turn it's an automatic fail. The Proctor will be in the passenger seat but will not say a word during the test. Very different from US testing. The national average number of attempts for passing the Japanese car license test is 11 tries before passing...

I'm all for road rage! I think you should be allowed to shoot at bad drivers!

Ok, I kid, only a little though. My suggestion is you are allowed 10 paintballs a week and you shoot any car that you think deserves it, the arse that turns right across traffic, making you slam on your breaks to avoid hitting him, or maybe that driver that's to short to see over the dash and drives like a crazy person?

By "Marking" this driver, you are doing a public service and showing everyone else on the road that the car with all the paint on it is a bad driver and you should avoid him! When you get home and your car is covered in paint, you can reflect on it and mend your ways, lest you be covered again next week!

This rant brought to you by the good people in Asia, who drive as offensively as possible and who are always willing to scare you half to death with their driving style more suited to the Sunday's demolition derby.

Anyone living in Asia that takes offense to my post, please remember, "Tongue in cheek"

hmmm maybe this should have going in a different thread?

That sound a little like my 'clown stencil' idea. And a little easier too. I thought you could paint on, using the clown stencil, a clown on any car who's driver was behaving like a clown. Unfortunately catching up with the clowns in order to paint their car proved rather difficult, and if they caught you red handed (I would use yellow paint if the car was red), it could be tricky to talk your way out of!

Yes, you'll be a little nervous. That's to be expected if you're a conscientious person. But I predict that you'll do a great job and be very happy that you chose to push yourself a little!!
I'm going to talk about my project about accident risk for young drivers in Belgium. We did a survey about this and were able to calculate which factors put young drivers most at risk. As was expected, the lack of driving experience was factor number one.

They let me chose whether I wanted to present, if I didn't then my boss, who worked on the project with me, would go to the conference. But I decided to do it myself because it will be a great learning experience. I'll probably spend a couple of weeks preparing my presentation though.

Wow, that's your test? Why don't they just let you drive in traffic? I think that's the only way to make sure you have enough insight in traffic to decide whether or not you deserve a driver's license. Good luck with the test, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

The test isn't about the measuring ability to drive. It's about the ability to follow 'their' instructions 'to the letter.'

As you know, the skills of driving are gained through experience. I've been driving for almost 40 years, holding licenses from three other countries. It's all about; did I check left and right at every required spot? Did I put my directional signals on at EXACTLY 30 meters before making a turn (not 25m nor 35m... I will walk the track before the test and actually measure the location for each signal...) Did I look left and then right, or did I look right and then left? For my motorcycle license I was required to put the kickstand up with my right foot, not my left foot... and look over my right shoulder before I straddled the bike. It will be the same sort of attention to details for the car test. I anticipate that it will take me at least 4-5 attempts before I satisfy the Proctors. NO ONE HAS EVER PASSED ON THE FIRST ATTEMPT. EVER.

That's just plain stupid ... As if things like looking right than left instead of left than right matter when you're driving. And is the test all new drivers have to do? Are there other tests as well?

That's unbelivable! It took me 3 goes, which seemed a lot at the time, but then I was only 16 (they are changing the driving age to 18 here in the UK soon, btw).

I think that's a brilliant idea. I was comtemplating applying for a gun license recently, as the standard of driving in the UK has taken a dive lately (lots of undertaking and tailgating), but maybe a paintball gun would be safer...
