And on another, less geeky note...

Last night I went to visit some old friends with whom I had lost touch for close to 10 years. They are living on some property inherited from his parents, and are working on fulfilling their lifelong dream of starting up a small farm. They've got plenty of acreage and are dabbling with several endeavors -- a few cows, a herd of goats, 4 horses, and chickens. Now I've been lamenting here in the forums about my inability to find fresh eggs locally. When I saw the chicken coop I asked Beth if she got enough eggs to sell some of them, and she hooked a basket off of the kitchen wall, tossed it at me, and said, "We get plenty of eggs. Go out and gather them now and you can have whatever is there." Imagine my joy! I've actually never had the experience of gathering eggs and I'm sure I've never had eggs quite that fresh! I got seven, but Beth rounded it out to a dozen for me from what she had gotten the day before, and slipped me a jar of honey, too (they've also got bees). I had so much fun -- I was giddier than a 4 year old at a petting zoo!

I'm glad that you were able to get really fresh eggs! Nothing tastes quite like them!

Years ago we met a family who had done just what your friends are doing. He had been a mathematician working for NASA for years, finally giving it up when he inherited the farmhouse and land. They raised all their own veggies, had cows for milk, pigs, sheep, chickens, etc... They wanted to be totally self-sufficient but finally they both had to do 'outside' work to get enough cash money for taxes, doctor bills, etc... They had two kids, both pre-teen, who seemed to take up most of the cash for doctor bills. I remember the wife telling us about the 'Special Birthday Present' she gave her husband one year... She hired two men to come early in the morning of the husband's birthday, and do ALL the farm chores so her husband could sleep in! He said it was the best birthday present he'd ever received!

After living hand-to-mouth for a number of years, my friends have actually inherited quite a bit of money along with the property. It truly couldn't have happened to better people, because they are absolutely generous with their time and their property. They've even put in a pool, and had an airstrip cleared. (He owns 2 vintage planes.) Wonderful people, and I'm lucky to know them.

Rich or poor, it's nice to have money!

My mom had several chickens when I was small. (Fresh) eggs were all I ate those days. I guess that made eggs indifferent to me: I didn't even know there were not-fresh eggs too :|

Makes me wish my country was big enough to have traditional farms. I'd love to retire to one; it sounds really romantic and peaceful, and away from the hustle and brustle of city life.

Right now, I'm trying to decide whether to go to sleep or continue surfing the internet. I love playing with google. It's fun typing whatever comes to mind in the search engine and clicking on links that sound interesting.

Awesome! Sounds great. Looks like I might get to indulge my country girl as well, the friend that we went to de-crap her computer last week (see Vent and Rant about the DEER), has horses. I haven't been around horses since before I left Texas. Love them and don't get to be around them. We'll see how often I can make it out there though.

Just drive across the Causeway and north for 30 minutes... Seems like a lot of room there. Ugly flat room... but room.

I am being absolutely completely 100% lazy. this is my first completely free weekend since the middle of March. I have actually brought the laptop into my room and am surfing in bed. i was going to go to the Farmer's Market and pass out more fliers, but have decided to just completely recharge. I'll probably take the kitties out in their harnesses later this afternoon, but for now it will just be surfing, reading and snoozing ;o)

I hope to get a little reading in this weekend sometime, but RIGHT NOW I'm taking a little mobleread break from my work, which is to implement a WCF webservice for a new project that I just got involved with.
