Are they? The freebies I've gotten through them before use Overdrive for distribution (meaning you use OD's software to download), but were MP3's, not DRM'd WMA's. Haven't downloaded these ones yet.

They're in MP3 format, which I guess means no DRM?

what are the pitfalls of installing the Overdrive software? I am always suspect of programs from commercial sources such as Overdrive that are said to be free as there is almost always a hidden toll such as granting rights to scan your system for content or track your online activity, etc. So I thought I would ask because otherwise it would be nice to find a new audiobook now and that, especially of the sort not likely to be found from other sources.

I installed it a few months ago to be able to download audiobooks from the library. Best I can tell, it doesn't run in the background when not in use, so I don't think it's spyware. I understand your concerns, though. Maybe someone can weigh in with more information.

Same here; I've had it since the beginning of the year and never had any issues, or noticed anything dodgy about it.

It isn't "free" in the sense of having to provide income from ads - it's software provided by the company that contracts with libraries and bookstores to fulfill their orders. No worse than installing Adobe ADE. Overdrive makes their money from the people at the other end and is involved even for EPUBs at the library (just on the back-end, rather than the front for audibooks).

It's also who will fulfill the Harry Potter books and oversee the library system on Kindle.

Overdrive is safe by all indications. Koland is correct, it's free to you, because it's paid for by the content providers (sometimes, that's you, again, with your library tax dollars....)

However, if you are concerned, you could run Overdrive Media console on a 'sanitized' VM that is only on when you're using it for that purpose.
