sony prs505 loading problem
Having though my battery was gone I have spent some time reading various posts and concluded that the problem is not the battery. Basically when it turns on it freezes at loading, if I take out the SD card it then comes back in some way so not sure if the SD card is th eproblem. Have deleted the books fromt he reader as did not have much on, tried a soft reset but am afraid of deleting stuff or doing internal reset or anything.
If it is the SD card what do I do about that do I need to delete all the books and put back again as this would be a nightmare as I have about 900 on it. Any advice welcome |

Why a nightmare... just use a card reader and drag 'n' drop the files onto your hard disk... reformat (FAT32) SD card and try it in the 505. If it doesn't work then it may be faulty, check in another device. If it works OK then replace the books with drag 'n' drop again but only half of them... if it still works then put more back until it stops again (if it's a file problem) and then you'll know that one of the last batch is faulty and keep doing until you pinpoint the dud, if it fails with the first half then you know it's in the first hale so pull half of that off and see if it works... keep going until you hit the dud and if you don't (and it's working) then the card may have corrupted and you cleared it with the format...

A nghtmare cos I have so many books on it. When I get it connected to calibre it does read the card so am not sure why it doesn't on the reader. The card has worked for a number of years which indicates to me it is probably a book. Is there anyway through calibre of knowing which book is at fault

Just checked on calibre and although the card shows up it is only showing about 30 odd books. This is a real pain as I have books on different computers, as I have got a new computer a couple of years ago so to try to get the collection together will be a nightmare. Any ideas of how to get the books off the card?

Use a card reader, if you haven't got one then you may be able to borrow one or buy (they're very cheap now) and just dump the lot on your hard disk... they'll all be in one place then...

Have looked at the file folder and all the books appear to be on the card so have copied them to one area on my pc to back up. Went back into calibre but only 30 odd appearing on card there. Do I need to delete these 30 or all of them from the card. Do I need to format the card or is it a book that is the problem?

Update - following various pieces of advice I transferred my books from the sony sd card to my pc. I then put three books onto it and turned the reader on and low and behold it worked. It is obviously one particular book that caused the problem so will rebuild the collection slowly onto the card. Thanks to everyone for their help.

The number of books might also have something to do with it. With SD cards being so cheap, you could just get a few low capacity ones, and load a few books on each one. And even if the number of books didn't cause the freezup, I believe that it does slow things down, so splitting them up might speed things up too.

Number of books unlikely to be the problem as only 900 on it... by your logic my 505 should have ground to a halt with 25K on a 16GB SDHC card... and it works fine, even without PRS+, it was happy with a two or three thousand...

Not really my logic. When the 650 came out, I read a bunch of threads where people mentioned quicker loading when one loads up many books, and it might even have been touted as one of the improvements.
