It helps a lot that I'm reading it on my brand new Nook STR, which I really like a lot!

I'm reading the Maude translation, so if I end up liking the book, I might have to run through it again because I've read that the Pevear translation reads better.
I rather liked the religious bits, and the way numerology was used in the book to prove that Napoleon was the Antichrist. I do like the way Tolstoy gets into the heads of his characters.

Finally got around to reading the first two chapters of Generation Loss by Elizabeth Hand. Great stuff!

I've always had a thing for this author ever since I read Winterlong many years ago. If she had all her works on ebook I'd buy them all, but unfortunately not.

....off to write nagging email to author....

The Lost Art - Simon Morden.

First, sorry if it's been covered before, too many threads/posts to be checked to be sure !
Just finished reading Simon Morden's "The Lost Art" - an interesting " post-apocalypse " piece, bought in a charity shop, p/back.
Good storyline and plot device.

Interesting enough to make me try some more of his - they are all in ebook as far as I can see, Kobo certainly.

Starting on book 4 in Song Of Ice And Fire. Book 3 has so far been the best compared to book 1 and 2.

I also picked up some Perl books since O'Reilly is having 50% off today: http://oreilly.com/store/dd-perl50oscon.html. Learning Perl is out in the 6th edition (Released: June 2011) covering recent changes to the language up to Perl 5.14

Book 3 is my favourite, too.

i just got done with The Imossibles by Randall Garrett and laurence Janifer it was really good you can find it in the science fiction section. the weird part about it was that this guy was righting about the future in the 1970's 80's probably not knowing how far technology would go and were almost there with a lot of it. I just downloaded the book The Highest Treason also by Randall Garrett i will tell you how it goes.

Just started "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan" by Lisa See and I am really enjoying the read. It will be one of those hard-to-put-down books for me.

Finished Three Men in a Boat and enjoyed it greatly. Some of the scenes were very funny. I was surprised at some of the medical terms. I always thought medicine was still primitive in the 19th century. He called bacteria "poison germs." And I didn't realize tin cans were readily available in 1889.

Next I'm going to try Blood Harvest by S.J. Bolton. A recommendation. Sounds scary so there is a good chance I won't finish it.

Just finished Carte Blanche, Jeffrey Deaver's James Bond offering, which was far better than the Sebastian Faulks previous attempt but still not quite there.

Now reading His Robot Wife by Wesley Allison - a nice quick read to cleanse the pallet.

Your friend is probably right. I kept feeling that Deaver was trying to write with an eye on what the cinematic effect would be. He even says at one point about the reflection of flames in a woman's eyes "It was a striking image". I felt this got in the way of the storytelling.

He also tries to reference back to the older Bond stuff - one character is called Felicity Willing (echos of Pussy Galore etc.), and in the Daniel Craig days of a grittier Bond, I didn't think it worked.
