These ebook will be available to kindle the same way library ebooks are going to be available to kindle users through Overdrive. I really don't get what the whole thread and its argument for and against epub on kindle is about.

Just one small detail. So far the Overdrive-Kindle-library nexus is initially going to apply only in the USA. So it's not clear what will happen in other markets.

Yes but overdrive have built a system where they can get books on to kindle and they are involved with the Harry Potter ebooks so you can guess where I am going with this.

I haven't seen anything official to indicate that this is so. It'd be nice if it was so, of course, but....source, please?

Pottermore's CEO has said they'll be available on the Kindle, how that will happen will proabably be speculated on until either the Pottermore folks give more details or until the books are actually released. Overdrive does distribute Mobi format as well as ePub and PDF so it may be as simple as that, they'll be done through OD just like the ePubs (if there are ePubs) will and be just like any other sideloaded book on the Kindle.

Unless OverDrive offers support for implementing their trace-DRM, I can't imagine they could go through OD as a provider. Maybe OD already does this, I don't know, but I thought OD only supported No-DRM and Adobe-DRM.

The Pottermore people are also on record, IIUC, as saying that "all devices" can read ePub. It may be safe to say that they don't know yet what they're doing / going to be doing. No shame in that -- they have until October, after all.

Maybe that's all they currently support, but OverDrive provided DRM'ed mobi's for quite a while—once upon a time. It wouldn't be an entirely unexplored new frontier for them.

Maybe, but with ZERO announcement of a Pottermore--OverDrive partnership at this point, I think it's premature to start speculating that OD is going to start offering HP-flavor DRM just for these 7 books.

They still do AFAIK. Some libraries have quite a few Mobi books and Books On Board uses OD as a distributor commercially.

I agree. I just figured it was OK if I speculated about your speculation about someone else's OD speculation—before we try to curb speculation with more speculation, that is.

Thanks. I kind of suspected that was the case, but I didn't want to throw it out there speculatively.

Since the folks running Pottermore care about the average consumer and not at all about techie format zealots, we can be sure that the Potter books will be available in various formats on the appointed day.
