Not in the UK. The Kindle has an almost complete domination of the British market - far more than it does in the US, because we lack serious competitors such as B&N and Kobo. I'd be extremely surprise if Ms. Rowling were to ignore the Kindle market.

Maybe Amazon are moving to ePub because of this. We just don't know for sure. And we'll may not know until October.

The problem is that the Kindle just cannot give a good enough reading experience if the eBooks are done right.

I'd disagree on observation... I see Sony, Elonex, iRiver, Android tablet and iPads in use far more than Kindles in the Birmingham area... maybe the Kindle users only read in the privacy of their own homes...

This astounds me a little. Perhaps my pocket pro has a poor implementation of ade but I find ebooks on the kindle far superior. I never have issues but with all the epubs I have bought there bad been justification and font zooming issues. Maybe if I had a more current ePub device my issues would be gone.

I somehow feel that most people aren't going to base their Ereader buying decision on whether Harry potter is on it or not. A small majority might but I don't think amazon is too scared. As poor as you and others have said that mobi is.......well the reported 65% of the Ereader market that belongs to amazon can't be that wrong.

And that's why VHS ended up dominating the video tape market rather than Betamax or one of the others... market share often bears little relation to quality and a lot more to marketing...

I think an HP themed Sony with well made HP eBooks will influence people's decision of what device to buy. Would you want to read the HP eBooks in the Kindle's standard font or would you want to read the HP eBooks with all the different fonts that are in the pBooks? ePub can deliver this experience. Mobipocket cannot.

Also, having an HP themed Reader is going to appeal to a lot of people and not just kids. if Amazon does not go ePub and the ePub are that well made, I can see the reviews saying to go with the ePub and I can see people buying ePub capable readers just for that reason.

Granted, a lot of ePub are not well made but in this case if they are, this is going to be a big boon to ePub and a downfall for Mobipocket.

Would be nice if Amazon moved to epub, with Amazon DRM. Not ADE.

No, we do not need yet another flavor of DRM for ePub. If Amazon was to go ePub, they really should be using ADE.

Does Amazon need Harry Potter to continue to thrive? Nope.
Does Amazon want to get in on the Harry Potter train? Well hell yes.
Techies have been importuning Amazon to move to ePub for a while now, for various technical and aesthetic reasons. What they have not done is to give a BUSINESS reason why Amazon should expend the substantial money needed to convert to ePub. Well, now there is a bonafide business reason for the move.
Since Amazon is also adding a line of tablets this fall, it makes business sense for Amazon to make the move now. Does ePub display comics and magazines better than Mobi? I dunno, but I suspect so. If that's true, then it makes the move to ePub this fall that more economically sensible.

I don't know if even the lure of Harry Potter would convince Amazon to allow epub, but I'd be glad if they did.

I'm very happy with my Kindle, but increasing the options can only be good for me and other Kindle users.

Understandable. ADE just seems like a pain, but I don't have much experience with it. I don't think Amazon would adopt ADE anyway, though. They may. All I care about is the extra formatting niceties.

Well if she does go the way you are suggesting, my primary reason for not buying HP ebooks would be because I want the choice of being able to read them on my Kindle. I don't want to have dictated to me what sort of ereader I must have.

I do wonder whether JKR would seriously want to piss off her loyal existing customers who have already got the dt set and would be in the market for a e-set. I can't see why she would want to restrict the format in this way.

I'm bored with every "X will force Amazon to <blah> and the world will rejoice" scenario people seem hell-bent on dreaming up.

1) The Kindle (and Amazon) will live or die; don't really care either way—and I love the one I own.
2) People will read Harry Potter on Kindles or they won't; again... either way, don't care.
3) Amazon will move to support epub or they won't; either way, the sun will still rise and I will still be reading books by its light.

Speculation is fine... but sheesh! The idea that any corporate giant could be forced to bow before Harry Potter is just asinine.

Each & every thing you quoted said compatible. Compatible does not mean in Kindle format. It means it will be able to be viewed on a Kindle. I'd say clearly, and yes, this is speculation on my part, that they know something about Kindle and epub that the rest of the world doesn't know yet.

Only just caught up with this......

"...knowing Sony ....ominous feeling...ill portent."

'Course, that wouldn't be anything like the ominous feeling probably even more people would have, if kindle had it's hand in the bag, ho no, no ill portents coming up there ......

Mind you, all this'll give the Truly Near to God another opportunity to burn books...... ah, no, they'd have to hack into the systems , wouldn't they, and wipe drives etc...

Doesn't really have quite the same ring to it, does it ?
