OK, I'll give her a try. Sleight Malice is 99¢ at the moment for the Kindle.

I've been trying to get these books from Smashwords and for some reason the transaction won't go through. I've messaged them three times but have had no response.

I'm listening to the audio of the third book in the Bree Beaufort series: Avenging Angels. It's got a strong paranormal angle so I'm surprised it isn't more popular in online book forums. Series does need to be read in order.

I have just discovered this thread. Thanks for all the great recommendations! I've always been a fan of Donna Andrews "bird" series (Murder with Peacocks is the first in the series) along with Joan Hess' Maggody series. Robert Barnard is another good writer in the cozy genre, though some of his are hard to find and I'm not sure if any are available as e-books. Lately I've been reading some mysteries by Christie contemporaries. I just finished Mary Roberts Rinehart's Circular Staircase. It was a bit slow at first but I liked the narrator and got drawn into the puzzle.
Now I need to go check out some of the suggestions I've gotten from other posts . . . |

I've always thought of Agatha Christie's books as cosy mysteries (at least as in a good book to curl up with).

Hello everyone I havent visited for quite some time now so glad that the cozy pages are still going strong. I have been reading an awesome cant put down series though and so has my mum, it's definately a cozy not a mystery cozy but the characters become like your dear friends from the beginning.
An Irish Country Doctor (This is the first book in the series) BY PATRICK TAYLOR The beloved New York Times bestseller, now in paperback Barry Laverty, MD, can barely find the village of Ballybucklebo on a map when he first sets out to seek gainful employment there, but he already knows that there is nowhere he would rather live than in the emerald hills and glens of Northern Ireland. The proud owner of a spanking-new medical degree, Barry jumps at the chance to secure a position as an assistant in a small rural practice. At least until he meets Dr. Fingal Flahertie O’Reilly. The older physician, whose motto is to never let the patients get the upper hand, has his own way of doing things. At first, Barry can’t decide if the pugnacious O’Reilly is the biggest charlatan he has ever met, or the best teacher he could ever hope for. Ballybucklebo is long way from Belfast, and Barry soon discovers that he still has a lot to learn about country life. But if he sticks with it, he just might end up finding out more about life—and love—than he ever imagined back in medical school. Hope you love Patrick Taylors books as much as my mum and I do. bye for now lyric39 |

This is a wonderful book - and a wonderful book series. Sort of an Irish human version of "All Creatures Great and Small" - the description of life in simpler, gentler, but not idyllic times. |

I think this is why Louise Penny's Chief Inspector Gamache are so popular ... no sex, no gore, murders galore, a puzzle with enough clues to solve along with the narrator ... and it invokes the "golden age" by setting the mysteries in a small quaint village with some eccentric characters, a dash of sly humour and a bit of exploration of personal relationships and motivations. Where I think "modern cozies" falter is in too much emphasis on the gimmick (endless recipes or house cleaning tips ...) and a tendency to be too "perky". I still want a little substance between the pages even if these are disposable entertainments. Authors who can't get create characters beyond the cardboard cut-out become tiresome. In the end, it's about story-telling -- it just happens to be within the "cozy" formula. Great characters, cool puzzles or intriguing unraveling of clues, will always be in fashion ... which is why Miss Christie continues to generate sales any modern cozy author will envy. |

How can I get hold of the "Irish Country Doctor" series please ?
Kobo can't, 'cos of "geographic blah blah.." and it sounds right up my (maternal family) street ! The title has echoes of the wonderful "Country Magistrate" - which isn't a mystery, just a glorious surprise ! |

Dunno if anyone has posted this, but Amazon has a number of "cozy mystery" novel collections , which are being sold for the very reasonable price of $0.99. Go HERE for the first one:
BLURB Product Description NOTE: This edition has a linked "Table of Contents" and has been beautifully formatted (searchable and interlinked) to work on your Amazon e-book reader, Amazon Desktop Reader, your iPad/iPhone ebook reader and any other device that carries the Amazon app. Cozy mysteries are a subgenre of crime fiction in which sex and violence are downplayed. Cozies very rarely focus on sex, profanity or violence. The murders take place off stage, and are often relatively bloodless (e.g. poisoning), while sexual activity (if any) between characters is only ever gently implied and never directly addressed. This edition contains three cozy novels by acclaimed authors, Anne Austin and Anna Katharine Green. Included in this collection: Cozy Mystery One: Murder at Bridge A mystery written by acclaimed mystery author, Anne Austin. Broadway belle Nita Selim (an actress with a colorful past) has come to a prosperous Midwestern town and inserted herself into local high society. But neither she nor they are all what they seem, as becomes clear when she's found dead during a bridge party. Investigator Bonnie Dundee tracks the killer with earnest derring-do, and the plot keeps him and the reader guessing pretty well. This is the original and unabridged version of this classic whodunnit. Cozy Mystery Two: The Mill Mystery A mystery written by acclaimed mystery author, Anna Katharine Green. One of her most interesting mysteries, this explores the nature of moral weakness when confronted with violence. A young clergyman is found dead in mysterious circumstances in a disused mill. The news is fatal to his fiancée. And an imperious matron on the other side of town also has a stroke on hearing the news. Why? And why are her two sons behaving in such a sinister manner? The dying fiancée’s room-mate – a level-headed orphan – decides to investigate, takes a job nursing the sick woman, and helps to uncover a shocking tale of selfishness, greed and hypocrisy. Cozy Mystery Three: The Woman in the Alcove Another great mystery written by acclaimed author, Anna Katharine Green. A young nurse gets engaged during the course of a ball in New York. Then a woman is found murdered and her diamonds stolen. The nurse investigates, in an effort to clear her fiancé’s name. A must-have for fans of classic mysteries! ================================ Dunno how good these are-Cozies aren't my cuppa- but for those who like it-enjoy! ![]() |
