Wow. Over-react much? I was teasing.

I do take their DRM announcement (i.e., not "supposition") very seriously. I'm sorry I somehow offended you by talking about it online.

NEW SONY READERS!
It'll be interesting to see if folks who aren't Sony die hards (in the U.S.) pay the substantial premium for their Readers. This affiliation will probably justify (in their corporate mind) the continued high price.

Yeah, the announcement is bitter sweet for me. On the one hand, I love my 950 and when BB ran the clearance sales I was afraid Sony was closing down the line. On the other hand, $300 for an eReader in 2011 is really comparatively steep.

I think it's worth it... for me... but it's hard for me to recommend it to others.

If it's a Potter-branded reader, then yes, quite a number of HP die-hards will probably pay the price premium if only for being a "collectible". Of those, probably only very few would buy another ebook aside from the Harry Potter ebooks that will likely come pre-loaded on the device.

Yes, if Sony suddenly stops being Sony and starts being price-competitive, that would be awesome. I'm not holding my breath, though.

(Gawd, I've already been branded a Nook-hating, Sony-lover in the B&N forums. Am I going to hear that I'm a Sony-hater now? SCION, help me!! )

I love my Sony 950 too but like you, I find it very hard to recommend it to people, especially newbies to ebook reading devices. I know why I thought it was worth the premium price (and still do), but those reasons don't apply to everyone.
I plan on using mine until it just drops dead - and praying there's a comparable replacement out there when that happens.

I would be shocked if she only sold e-books using ADE EPUB DRM. She is going to be selling them on her website. I expect that she will sell them using all the various formats.

I think kids will want it and parents will give in especially if it gets them reading more.

But I bet you'll be able to buy a Sony Reader with all the Harry Potter books pre-loaded ready to be read. No other brand will be doing that.

Kind of how Apple released the HP iPod back when she first exclusively released the audiobooks digitally through them years ago (except the ebooks won't be exclusive of course).

It cost the same as the non-HP iPod ($299), but you had to buy it with all six (at the time) audiobooks ($249).

Depends. If it is only a cloud book, I wouldn't even touch it with a stick. I don't have a wifi/3G enabled reader, nor do I want one.

I hope the books are formatted with different fonts to simulate the books because yes, you can get the text on a Kindle, but you can't get the fonts in AZW. This will make it even better for Sony.

Take that Amazon for going with an obsolete format (I hope).

I will buy them as long as :
1 ) The ebook is not full of OCR, properly formated all that. I'll be expecting high quality after all these time
2 ) there is no DRM (including watermark), I can't take off easily.
