The only way to do that would be to release the books in multiple formats without DRM. I reckon the only format supported by every device is plain text.

Not to mention how many constantly "web connected" devices are out there? If you extract WiFi, which really depends on location, the only "new" device on the market with 3G would be the Kindle and...um... Sony? Do some of the Sonys have 3G? I never use it, so I can't say.

Nope, I stand by my Wild Mass Guessing that the whole announcement will be wiped and retconned once the HP team does their research.

Nah. It probably won't be web only. There are a number of ereaders that can't connect to the web directly. Even if you have an ereader that supports wifi, a wifi hotspot or access point is not always available. Heck, even with a 3G-capable device, there are times when you get spotty coverage or no coverage at all (e.g. when overseas).

I suspect this. There have been murmurs of epub support on the Kindle.

This is a significant move, as it means that the ebooks can be used on any device, from Amazon's Kindle to Apple's Ipad

This makes sense to me. But I've not seen these Overdrive announcements yet. I'm pretty sure that we're seeing announcements from many different people/sources that just don't have all of the details and/or technical chops.
