I think that just means Potter novels, not all novels, but even if she never writes another word, I'm still incredibly thrilled with what we did get.

I'd like to repeat my question. Does anyone know how they are going to provide DRM'ed ebooks (directly from their own site) that will be compatible with the Kindle? To my knowledge, this is uncharted territory (unless they plan to release DRM-free ebooks).

Non DRM, that would be total awesome, but don't don't really see that happening.

Yes, Diap, it is uncharted territory and as Rowling says herself "[I am] lucky to have the resources to do it myself and am therefore able to do it right." Fascinating! We'll see how it works out! I really can't see Rowling releasing DRM-free ebooks.

I don't see it happening either, but when you really think about it... what would be the point of putting DRM on these ebooks at this point? It's kind of like closing the barn-door after the cows already got out.

And I am visualizing the Pottermore site as less of a treasure hunt and more of an internet-scale Torah, where everyone can add their own annotations and discussions of every word of the book.

Well, drm for kindle uses the kindle PID. Kindle PIDs are only known to amazon. So either it's mobi without drm, either it's not kindle compatible.

Which in and of itself would be an odd claim, because even if you exclude Kindles, not all devices can read Adobe DRM. It would almost HAVE to be a DRM-free mobi/epub/txt/PDF/lit/etc. download.

But the "all devices" claim will be written off as the newspaper quoting them wrong, I don't doubt. And they'll sell the books on Amazon just like everyone else. Why make their own life difficult when Amazon exists and is there to be used?

Is... I don't even know what to call it. It sounds like a newbie to the ePublishing industry hearing that OMG FRACTURED FORMATS and making some kind of grandiose claim that they're going to skate around all that to provide a perfectly homogeneous experience for the readers by The Power of Money!!

I don't want to be a snob about this, but that whole quote to me screams "ePublishing n00b is new at this". I mean, she's openly admitting that she's a late comer to the eREADING experience, but she's going to do something impossible -- EVERY READER, SAME EXPERIENCE -- in her first ePUBLISHING effort. Doubtful.

Good luck with that, Rowling, but if the goal is EVERY READER, SAME EXPERIENCE, then I don't think these bad boys are going to be out this year or, indeed, ever. Even if they cram publisher defaults all over the books, some devices don't honor publisher defaults. What are you gonna do about those??

Publish them the way everyone else does and move on, would be my vote, but whatever.

Amazon hasn't used Device specific PIDs for Kindle books for quite some time now, but your ultimate premise is still correct.

BTW, I'm not bitching about this... I'm genuinely curious as to how this will be achieved.
