Gee if only the publishers were as knowledgeable as folks on this board on how to REALLY make money. The secret to success is to sell your brand new product priced at used prices. Why I just know that consumers would be a lot more willing to buy an ebook for a nickel than for $12.99, so the publishers are just leaving all those nickels on the table, money they'll never see.

I think part of it is down to the economy. When people have less $ to spend they want things to be cheaper priced so they have a change to afford what they want. And if publishers keep prices high even though people aren't able to spend as much as before they'll see less sales. Better 5 sales at $1.99 than 1 sale at $4.99 or something.

I have quite a selection of books from the late 19th or early 20th centuries that are basically as good as new.

Used books were discussed in relation to Murder on the Orient Express, first published in 1934.
Not exactly a brand new product, and I think it has covered the advance by now.
This almost defines the long tail, and their prime competition is used book sales.

Kindle Price: £3.99 includes VAT & free wireless delivery via Amazon Whispernet
You Save: £3.00 (43%)
Unlike print books, digital books are subject to VAT.
This price was set by the publisher

Amazon's paperback price for this book is £4.73, so I'd consider an eBook price of £3.99 pretty reasonable myself.
That isn't a book that falls under Agency pricing for some reason. On the US store, it is $6.99, which is standard MMPB pricing. Also interestingly, the US store doesn't sell the MMPB at all.

Yes, it is an agency book, that's what the "this price was set by the publisher" line means in the price information I've copied above.

Yes, clearly the publishers are achieving stunning levels of success and are just rolling in money with what they do now. Even the oil and drug industries are jealous! I expect the Mexican drug cartels to get into publishing soon.

Ah, the UK store displays things differently than the US store. Odd.

Maybe they could combine the two? Drugs AND books?

I'm thinking now that the "read to me" books could be marketed in new directions. "Books to listen to when high"....

HINT: NOT Rushdie's The Satantic Verses. What a scary trip THAT would be.

I agree Publishers have always had that. However E-Books can allow them to compete with that market and get something rather then nothing at all, with little extra cost or effort to themselves.

And while I would like it, I'm not really expecting Publishers to deeply discount new books, it could work as a viable strategy for older Midlist and Backlist books which right now are often even more expensive then the Paper or HB version.
