If I was to voice a negative opinion about the HP series, it would be that several of the later books are longer than I think they need to be.

Heck, I thought Philosopher's Stone could have been cut down by a good 50 pages. But then I'm ruthless when it comes to demanding conservation of narrative detail and I have never ever ever ever ever wanted to hear more about Unimportant Ancillary Character's backstory, childhood, parents, favorite pet, most flattering color, etc. I like world building and character building, but in service to a plot goal, not as fleshing out a pretty fantasy world to escape into. It's a personal preference, and very subjective. So I wouldn't call the books trash but I would call then "significantly longer than what I might have preferred". |

Either that, or he's the guy at my work who won't let his kids read them because he thinks the books are...... not appropriate for their religion.

Amusingly enough my parochial high school was of that opinion. So my dad, in a fit of humor, bought 2 boxed sets of the whole shebang. Donated one to his own church library and one to my high school's library. I think he wanted to see if they'd burn them.
