are you able to find books you want for free?

I'm debating whether to get an ebook at the moment, and being an avid downloader on the net, i was wondering if it's easy to find books you want for free? much like finding a movie online.

Are there any dedicated web sites or private torrent sites dedicated to sharing of ebooks?

'cuz if there are, then a kindle with epub support would make more sense since there are tons of ebooks out on the net in that format, however, if there are not, then i guess i would just have to get every single book from amazon like i do now

No one here is going to give you help in finding and downloading copyrighted works, which seems to be what you're asking.

However, there are a ton of resources for legitimately finding free ebooks. This forum has a ton of books, though the champ is probably Project Gutenberg.

Yes, but you won't get details about them here. As mentioned, MR policies don't allow posts/comments with links to sites that actively share copyrighted material without permission of the owners. However, here at MR there are links to plenty of *legitimate* free ebook sources, like the Baen Library and the Fifth Imperium collection, Project Gutenberg and Feedbooks free original works and Smashwords free ebooks, along with the Patricia Clark Memorial Library here at Mobileread, containing free, legal ebooks carefully hand-formatted by people who care about ebooks. We've also got a freebies & bargains forum that regularly features free promotional ebooks from authors & publishers along with various discounts.

If you love to read, an ereader would give you opportunities to read great books for free for the rest of your life, even without dipping into private filesharing sites. (And nobody's going to stop you from trying to find those; you just can't do it here.)

beyond what others have already pointed out (very humorous), I need to mention that there is no ePub compatible Kindle currently. If you are under that impression I'd begin with further research into current digital readers and their various options.

You've got about 500 years worth of classics in Gutenberg. You possibly won't have time for today's best-sellers for a long while and when you do, you'll probably want to re-read the classics than waste time on our time's fast-junk.

You can find some poorly scanned e-books on the darknet. I have tried to back-fill some favorite authors and found it frustrating as paragraphs are run together and wordsaresometimesslammed together.

The Kindle uses .mobi format so if you get a .epub you can convert it with Calibre (a e-boom management software) and then mail it to your Kindle or use a USB cable. But if you want a more open-source reader that supports .epub look into the Nook. It is an android-based e-reader and I think it supports .epub and .pdf as well as others.

Note: My local B&N is having a special presentation of the new Nook and the Nook Color tonight so call your local store to see when their having this event in your area.

If you want Nerd cred - Go to TigerDirect and order the Viewsonic G tablet ($299 - $30 coupon). You have to hunt around but you root it and load ClockWorkMod and a different Android flavor and you basically have a Android version of the iPad. I'm going to lunch today with a friend who loves his. I am bringing a flash drive with a .epub a .pdf and some 720 video files to check it out.

(In case I am not being clear - now you have a internet tablet so you can watch Netflix, download free and leagal epubs, read them, etc.)

The major bookstores offer lots of free books, I just got two free books by one of my favorite authors legitamately, through B&N. B&N also has monthly spotlights in which the spotlighted author's book is lowered in price. I bought my daughter a Judy Moody book for $1 in May when the author was spotlighted.

I have heard that Amazon has lots of good free books too. There are several blogs by avid readers that help people find free and low price books too. (legal copies, not pirated books).
