At that point I can use Calibre with no problems.

Good, I usually just take out my SD card and add books using a SD card reader. Works fine that way.

Oh, I was never able to get the SD card to work. I've tried four different ones, both standard and HC, and finally gave up on that a couple of months ago. At least now I've got the "right" USB cable labeled, with instructions regarding which port to use.

My problem was that, since my roommate doesn't read nearly as much as I do, in the time since I last put books on it I had forgotten how I got it to connect last time. That won't happen again. The Literati's preferred cable is now hanging on the wall next to my Kindle and iPod cables.

I had a similar problem of getting my computer to recognize the literati. I use a Dell laptop and it has 2 usb ports on the right side and a single port on the left. I have a wireless KB/mouse receiver plugged into one of the ones on the right. Using the other port on the right, I could never get the literati to be recognized. The port on the left would work. If I unplug the receiver, the port on the right works. I concluded it was interference with the receiver. Moving the receiver to the left side also allowed both on the right to work.

No Solution

After several emails and several weeks, the response from KOBO is the following comment ends the problem.

"To address the issue of the device failing, the device itself would have a small part of memory dedicated to saving your place in a book. If that part is not functioning correctly, this would not cause the eReader to fail, only the bookmarking functionality.
It is not an attempt to "pass the buck" as some would say, this is legitimately an issue with your eReader, and not the content."

Certainly is not a hardware problem - from where I sit. Guess I will live with writing down the page number before I power off. After all, I only paid $40...

That answer you got is completely wrong. Ereaders don't have a "small part of memory dedicated to saving your place in a book". That would be a waste of memory. The problem is more likely the software. Maybe not the reader software but the underlying OS on the device itself. I would try reinstalling the firmware and see if that fixes things.

This will erase anything on the internal memory but stuff on your memory card will be intact.

I think, by the comment from Kobo, they mean a piece of the database which is on the flashdrive portion of internal memory. This is likely the intent but perhaps the book isn't registered properly in the database. There are portions of the database designed to save all sorts of things and since this is called memory by your own admission since you called the SD card memory, they are technically correct, not completely wrong.

I haven't seen this mentioned before but almost all the free books that were pre-loaded on my literati are unreadable because the font is tiny EVEN at the largest setting. In fact the font size setting has zero effect on these books.

Other books are fine.

Does anyone else have this problem?

Bumping just in case someone has an answer...
Does anyone have a car charger that works with Literati?

I'm pretty sure you can't charge the Literati from it's USB port so you would have to use the charging port. To do that, you could find the appropriate connector (maybe at Radio Shack); snip off one end of a USB cable and attach the new connector to that cable. Then get a cigarette lighter to USB adapter (inexpensive at meritline.com) and you should be good to go. Since the Literati charger is 5 volts and the USB standard is 5v (I'm pretty sure) everything should work just fine. You would have to google for the correct wiring diagram and to check that the USB buss is 5v.

But I've not done this and there are no guarantees!

The dictionary in my Literati seems to be missing lots of word that start with "sa".

Does anyone else have this problem? Is it possible to copy the dictionary from one Literati to another? How?

Actually, at Radio Shack you should be able to get a 12v transformer that plugs into the cigarette lighter. You can plug the regular charging cord into that. No modifications needed.

While a USB port has 5VDC available, it's usually current limited to 500ma. The supplied charger is rated at 1.5A (1500ma). Rather than take a chance with a USB charger meant for a car, I'd rather use a 50-60 watt power inverter and plug the supplied charger into it.

Yes, that's what I meant. Like this one at Radio Shack. It has both 115v/75w and a USB charging port.
