Stitchawl, I'm afraid you're thinking much too difficult. You only need to look at the first factorials.
- Finding the factorials: 1! = 1 2! = 2*1 = 2 3! = 3*2 = 6 4! = 4*6 = 24 5! = 5*24 = 120 (=12*10) 6! = 6*12*10 = 720 (=72*10) 7! = 7*72*10 = 5040 ... Since getting the next factorial always involves a multiplication with 10 all following factorials will end with 0. - Adding the factorials: 1 + 2 + 6 + 24 + 120 + 720 + 5040 + ???0 + ???0 --------- ?????3 (Sorry, I'm not able to put the numbers in proper columns so that all last digits are shown one below the other). As all the following factorials end with a 0 the last digit 3 from 1+2+6+4 = 3 can't change anymore and you can ignore them all. |

@Billi, your second explanation has confused me even further. And to think I got "A" level maths once upon a long ago...

okay so are you gonna ask a new question now Billi??
@ orlok: let's just say, from 5! on, it doesn't matter 'cause the last digits of them are all 0s, so the last digit of the whole sum is decided by 1! + 2! + 3! + 4! only, which is 33. So, 3. Last edited by maianhvk; 06-19-2011 at 05:51 AM. |

![]() I can't use a calculator or enter serial numbers for software without having to try several times before I get it right. I took intermediate algebra three times in high school, and never once passed a test. My parents hired the Chairman of the Math department as my at-home tutor two nights a week for two years. Still, the highest score on any test I took was 57%. Of course, 65% was required to pass. It wasn't until many years later that I discovered I suffered from dyscalculia, the learning disorder for numbers similar to dyslexia for reading. When I think of all the tears, the screaming and yelling, listening to 'you have to try harder,' or 'you're not paying attention!' that went on during those years, and no matter what I did, I just couldn't keep the numbers from flying around on the page... And no one ever heard of 'learning disorders' back then. Interestingly enough, I had no problems with Geometry. All I had to do was parrot back the memorized the theorems (which were all words, so no problem) and I could get 75% of the score for each question, losing 25% for the actual number part. I was able to pass the class. Fortunately, in Grad school, when I had to take 'Financial Management,' which required working with formulas to analyze business problems and writing out recommendations for action, I was able to explain my problem to the Prof, who paired me with another student who was dyslexic but an absolute wiz with numbers, and we both got our 'B!' Stitchawl, a thousand apologises for my silly "I'm afraid...". I'm glad you finally found this professor in Grad school and that afterwards you could learn along your interests and strengths. That's the only thing that counts.
(And I very much envy you doing your diving adventures for a living!! ![]() |

Okay, and no more mathematics today. It's about a theme everyone of us has (unfortunately) something to say about, I think.
I'm looking for the name of a museum. Some hints: - it is located in Zagreb, Croatia - it opened permanently in November 2010, since 2007 the owners toured with the exhibits through Europe - in 2011 it was awarded the Kenneth Hudson Award which goes to a museum that has demonstrated "the most unusual, daring and, perhaps, controversial achievement that challenges common perceptions of the role of the museums in society" - some exhibition pieces: an axe, a slip, a bicycle, pictures, dresses - everyone can donate an exhibit to this museum (but has to explain the story around) - as far as I know it's the only museum of this kind in the world Some wild guesses? What is the museum about or what is the name of this museum? |

No, I'd like to go next time I'm in Zagreb. I was just telling a friend about the museum last week. Here is a link for any interested:
http://new.brokenships.com/en I read an article about it a few months ago highlighting some of the more interesting broken relationship stories. A really fun read! |

OK - here's a literary quiz:
In the original Edgar Rice Burroughs' "Tarzan of the Apes", what is Tarzan's full English name? |
