OK, no it's not an actual scam. You are delightfully Spock-like, sometimes, Harry.

Forgive my asking, but what is it that you're actually objecting to? The man is perfectly entitled to release a new edition of one of his books, is he not?

He certainly is. I don't object to it so much as I think it's exploitative re-packaging, not to mention silly to celebrate the "anniversary" of his book as if commemorating a milestone of English literature.

I hope fans of the work find it worthwhile. In the meantime, I shall express my curmudgeony-yet-civil opinions in the grand tradition of forums banter. You are now free to move about the cabin.

It's a cash-grab. But he's got the same right to do it as I do to ridicule it for what it is.

^ Exactly. It's all good people. I like Gaiman, I am not ashamed in the least that I will probably buy this "updated" version. But ultimately, I couldn't give a rat's ass what anyone else says -its my money and my time to do as I see fit/want. Still, I defend everyone's right to voice their opinions, as it should be IMO.

But I am waaaay past the point of caring what other people think...

No worries! Let's do a Rodney King and all get along

I read Neverwhere and would rate it a 3 out of 5. This one I tossed after 80-pages or so. Not only was the writing tedious, the homosexual sex scene was probably even too disturbing (and completely gratuitous) for most homosexuals. I just couldn't take anymore.

I don't have any comment about this book's being re-packaged, but I can tell you something I've seen that's similar in CDs that I find a bit immoral. There's one particular guitarist I recall who repackaged one of his most popular CDs at least three or four times during the early 90s. Each one was only slightly different, usually just replacing one song with a different one, or even with just a different take of the same song. So his fans would have to buy an entire CD just to get one new song that wasn't available on any other CD. Of course that's changed now with digital downloads where people can just buy the songs they want from a CD, but I think you see what I'm trying to say about the repackaging. It can be done in ways that are really just taking advantage of their fan's loyalty.

At the record company meeting
On their hands - a dead star
And ooh, the plans that they weave
And ooh, the sickening greed
At the record company party
On their hands - a dead star
The sycophantic slugs all say:
'I knew him first, and I knew him well'
Re-issue! Re-package! Re-package!
Re-evaluate the songs
Double pack with a photograph
Extra Track (and a tacky badge)
A-list, playlist
'Please them, please them!'
'please them, please them!'
(sadly, THIS was your life)
But you could have said no
If you'd wanted to. The Smiths - Paint a Vulgar Picture

Quoted for lulz, not because I really begrudge Mr. Gaiman his money-grab.

I'll give 'Neverwhere' a go at some point if it's better - thanks for the recommendation. Funny; I don't remember any homosexual love scene, gratuitous or otherwise, in AG.

The story between the ifrit cab driver and Salim, the salesman. I didn't find it gratuitous either. Actually a sweet coming together of two very lonely creatures.

Sexual descriptions of any kind are always gratuitous. A good writer would never stoop to such twaddle. They would simply imply that something sexual happened. The last thing they would do would be to describe two grown men gagging on each other's ****s. Yeah, that's really sweet....

and sometimes just implying is far more appealing and sexier ;3 unless the writer is a romance writer, i usually don't expect explicit descriptions

plus, i don't think two grown men would gag if they had skill and practice
