55%/45% is not heavy skewing in any case. Also, is anyone surprised that women read far more romance novels than men -- or that men watch more graphic porn?

nah, i prefer breeches being ripped by men with "hard thighs" (referring to a quoted part of the article in a duplicate thread).

i'm not. i've read a study or something about that before, that men are more visually stimulated while women are more stimulated by words. something along those lines.

For women it is more than just the racy scenes. Women want to know the back stories, and the many pages describing Fabio's tragic past are essentially foreplay. Something like this just works better in words than in images.

IF iPad sales are skewed towards men and IF eReader sales are skewed towards women and IF two such dissimilar devices can even really be compared...

It seems foolish to me to assume that the content is necessarily driving the purchases. In general, women in America tend to be socialized more (1) to spend less money on their personal purchases, especially gadget-based stuff, and (2) to buy based on a "need" than a "want".

If you're already buying books/magazines for yourself, the eReader satisfies a "need". You don't have to lug your books around anymore. You can get books from the library without having to juggle your work schedule (most libraries don't keep evening hours) or driving commute. You're saving the planet by not having more Dead Tree Books in the house. You're downsizing your book collection. The eReader is cheap -- and if the books cost even $1 less than paper books, it pays for itself over time.

The iPad is perceived by most of our culture as a want, and an expensive want at that. It does a lot of stuff and it does it well, but you're probably not going to lug it around as an eReader -- most people only take it with them on travel and otherwise just use it in teh comfort of their home. It's heavy and it doesn't do well in direct sunlight while you're waiting to pick up a spouse/kid/car-pooler. If you're shopping based on a need, and while on a tight personal budget, you're probably not going to throw down for an iPad nor for the data contract that goes with it.

Then, too, there's the economics of the situation. Do women still on average have less disposable income than men? Really. Well, gee, how shocking that the more expensive device has more men buying it, while the cheaper device is more popular with women.

Poorly researched pop science articles: Just say no.

I didn't read the article, but this makes me think I am not your average American female. Yes, I loved my Kindle, but not I love my iPad even more. I use it for everything, keeping track of schedules, playing games, Evernote is my major friend for keeping track of things in general, AwesomeNote helps me with my ToDo lists and grocery lists and gasp, I even READ on it, news, magazines AND books! Oh, and while I like romance/bodice rippers and breech rippers as much as the next girl, I also read more of other types of genres. Yep, just not your ordinary female, I guess. Of course, my hubby already knew that.

You and 45% of iPad buyers who are women. That's such a small "gender gap" as to make anything else about the comparison of kindle/ipad on gender ludicrous.

As is the suggestion that a kindle represents a "need" where the iPad is a "want".

I find the whole notion that womens magazines are selling 10 times more on the Nook than the iPad to be HIGHLY suspect. But if it's true -- then it CANNOT be because of the gender "disparity" between the two devices. What are the 45% iPad owners who are women buying? There's got to be more actual women owners of iPads than women owners of Nooks.

Couldn't agree more - I am a female gadget lover, but I am going to wait and get a cheaper Android tablet than rush in now and spend my money on an IPad. My Kobo does the job of ebook display very well and was cheap. I would not say I was poor but I do have an aversion to wasting money!

The article clearly states that they are slightly outselling iPad.
Thing is, there are about 2 million or so Nooks and 20 million-plus iPads. So it is the behavior of the *total* install base of the two products that they are comparing, not categorizing any specific individuals.
What it is really saying is that female Nook owners as a group are ten times more likely to buy "female magazines" than female iPad owners, as a group.
Which should be no surprise, as iPads are used for a lot more than reading and (for all the excitement over their hackability) the vast majority of Nooks are used solely for reading.
It should be no surprise, but to the magazine publishers it appears to be a revelation.
Go figure.

Fox themselves are getting the same sledgehammer message from the (lack of) sales of their iPad-only newspaper. Namely that, in the whole, iPads are used primarily as webpads and media/gaming tablets and that reading ebooks and mags is way down the list of users' preferred activities.
