Newspaper daily downloads on the Touch

Maybe I'm missing something, but we seem to have taken a step backward with the daily downloads of newspapers on the K-Touch. I can only see 2 wifi setting options: ON and AIRPLANE. ON means that it is showing up ON all the time and is likely a battery killer. AIRPLANE means that it's off, but it's going to ask before it turns on at all so that doesn't allow it to automatically download my newspaper before I get up. With the K-Wifi as long as I left it in sleep with the wifi off it would turn the wifi on and download the newspaper then turn wifi off again. I asked over at GetSatisfaction, but any thoughts here?

I have a couple more questions about newspaper subscriptions. I read the Toronto Star daily, but I currently have to pick it up at the newsstand since apparently nobody will deliver them to my apartment building. Now that I have a Kobo Touch I am interested in subscribing through that instead; Since I live outside the GTA $15 a month vs. $13.50 a week is much cheaper and VERY tempting. ;-)

1- What content from the paper do I actually get and what is missing? The description says that it may not include all photos and images. Specifically does this mean there will be no Sudoko, Kakuro, Crossword, Jumble, Wonderword, comics, weather, TV paper, etc? In Sunday's paper there are two bonus sections from the New York Times, are those included in the subscription too?

2- Do I still get to read yesterday's (and previous days') papers? Do I have to manually delete old papers when I'm finished? If for whatever reason today's sync doesn't happen will two papers show up the next day?

3- Are the newspapers fully readable on both the Kobo Touch and in the iPhone app?

4- "Daily" means all 7 days a week and not just Mon-Fri, right?

Newspapers come with a 14-day free trial, so why not subscribe & try it out?

Because it requires a credit card and I don't have one -- I'll have to go out and buy a prepaid Mastercard or Visa before I can do a trial. Yes, I realize that I would have to continually update the credit card info every so many months, and I realize there's an extra fee charged once the prepaid credit card has been activated for seven months.

A hassle for me, but only worth it once I know what I'm getting. If I bought a $50 Vanilla Mastercard it would pay for 3 months' worth of Toronto Star, and only cost me (including the fees) the cost of one months' worth of newspapers.

Well I am just trying the Star trial on my WiFi.

Today's paper has 9 sections; News (33 articles) / Editorials (11 articles) / Opinion (4 articles) / Business (14 articles) / Entertainment (8 articles) / Living (6 articles) / Greater Toronto (15 articles) / Special Section (4 articles) / Sports (18 articles).

I see no sign of the puzzles and even if there were, am not sure how they would be done (at least on my WiFi :P ).

I have a Globe Subscription and seem to recall I have access to at least 2 weeks of back issues on the Kobo. Now you can ONLY read these on the Kobo; the desktop application is not able to view the subscriptions. Also, I do receive the Globe 6 days a week; I will let you know next week how many Stars I receive.

At least with desktop 1.x you could see the individual days downloads on the desktop; with 2.x I could not get that to work at all, and was just told to use the website to manage my subscriptions.

I'm not toooo worried about the puzzles, I expect I'd run out of whiteout trying to do the crosswords anyway. lol kidding.. I'd miss the comics more than anything else graphical, especially now that comics.com has migrated over to gocomics.com any I no longer get to see the whole list on one screen, dangit.

Possum, desktop 2.0 does not work with non-Touch readers...yet. It's a problem for two version/one computer families for sure. Kobo staff are aware of this and are working to get it taken care of asap.

Newspapers on the Touch are nice. With the old desktop they would stay for 2 weeks unless you specifically marked them to save (you need to do that individually for each day's paper you wanted to keep) or until you deleted them. I assume the new desktop will reflect the same at some point.
They also stay on the Kobo itself for 2 weeks before it overwrites the oldest one so you don't have to delete previous ones as long as you don't mind 14 issues on the Kobo.
It will sync multiple previous days papers if you don't have it yet.

Has anybody else come across this before? I'm trying to add a prepaid Mastercard that I bought today to my kobobooks.com account, and get this error message every time:

"Sorry, but something went wrong with your purchase. If this problem persists, please contact Kobo Customer Care and provide them with error code [1001]."

I'd submitted a support request online last evening but had got no response by this morning. But I managed to solve my particular problem.

For anybody else getting my "error code [1001]" error when trying to add their prepaid credit card to their kobo account, it seems that the kobo store is trying to validate your card by address. For the Vanilla Mastercard in particular, you can set the Postal Code online at www.vanillamastercard.com to pretty much anything you want.

I suppose that technically I could have changed mine to something in, say, Alberta. That would have saved me $1.20 per month as they don't charge PST there? It's a difference between $15.75 ($15+GST) and $16.95 ($15+GST+PST), and $0.85 more than the total on my card over three months, dangit. I wonder if Kobo will take any funds off the $10 credit they gave me when I registered my Touch? Otherwise I'll probably be getting a $35 Visa every other month instead of a $50 Mastercard every three months.

You can download many newspapers to your Kobo for free using Calibre. Can anyone compare the free version of The Star to the paid version?

It's a nice option to have, but I pay for the National Post for 2 reasons: convenience of having it automatically download direct to my Kobo every morning and better formatting/ease of browsing. The paid version gives you an article list (article titles) for each section that you can scroll through and click on to read that article. The free Calibre versions of papers are more one big e-pub that you have to scroll through all the articles as your only method of navigating if I remember correctly. As I said, not a bad option, but I'm willing to pay for the convenience.
