Smile My Blatant Disregard for Paperbacks

I have bonded with my EB-1150. I treat it with loving care, whereas with paper books.... well, my co-workers have always been scandalized at my blatant disregard for paperbacks. They were usually too heavy for me, so I would split them into several parts, and then when finished, wrap a rubber band around them and pass the whole mess on to the next person.

I am glad to see that I am not the only one who feels this way. However, I am going to be a little bit less PC and say that a reader without a page count such as Sony Reader has would not suit me at all. I cannot imagine reading a book without knowing exactly the number of pages in total, the number of pages till the end and how "deep" into the book I am at any given moment.

I always try to ignore both progression bars and the last few pages of a book. It tends to remind you that the ride is almost over, but unless you specifically look, you don't really know when (Is the wrap-up after the climax really 10 pages? Or will the last 8 pages be advertisements for other books, plus your local Starbucks?). I've also been known to rush through an after-climax ending, just because I'm expecting the end any second now.

Generally, though, I don't give any thought to the actual length of the book... after all, some of the best novels I've ever read were less than 150 pages long. So I just note the bar, mostly for bookmarking's sake, and put it out of my mind.

I agree. My paperbacks can go into the fire for all I care as soon as I have a good ebook copy.

Hardbacks are another matter, especially the well-made ones (The Lord of the Rings Centenary Edition, my facsimile edition of The Origin of Species...)

I've always had a minimum of space, and so I never bought hardbacks. My entire collection is paperback, with the exception of a few of my wife's books, now, and a few gift books.

That's why I have an appreciation for e-books: The idea of fitting every book I own, even a library's worth of text, into a device in my pocket... well, words can't describe how incredibly cool I believe that is.

Steve, that's fine so long as what I want to read is available as an ebook, but too many books are not.

You're right. As much progress as we've seen, I still find myself searching for a book I want to read in an e-book format first, and as often as not, end up buying a paperback from Amazon or B&N. But I swear, if there was an easy way to do the conversion myself, I'd do my entire collection.

The Kindle may or may not turn out to be a long-term product or service (though, knowing Amazon, they'll let it ride for years waiting for it to turn a profit). But if nothing else, it will convince the last of the publishers who have not yet gone digital that now's the time to start converting new books to sellable digital formats (after all, it's stoopid easy to do through Amazon's existing system) and get them out there. That could be the boulder over the hill that finally starts the digital content avalanche.

===========================

As for any bond with paper...funny, I have ZERO bond with stuff like that. I actually prefer ebook reader devices over paper. As I also prefer Audible audiobooks over TV or movies for the most part.

I also might not be as bonded to paper anymore because I can no longer hold actual books in my hands so as to be able to read them. ebook devices make it possible for me to read again. Though none of the current eink devices actually have any sort of mechanism to prop-up the device. My Nokia N800 has it's kickstand and my nx73v Clie can be setup as sort of an a-frame. If I did buy an e-ink reader now I might just use an el-cheapo plate rack/holder...not pretty but sure would work.

But for now, if it's not out in ebook format I simply do not even consider it...what good is a book that causes pain just to hold on to in order to read it...I mean If I want that sorta pain I can just talk to my better half...heh...glad she doesn't read this place.

Actually, when I started, I was greeted with a drawing of Darth Vader on my whiteboard, not Alice Kruge.
