Siraks, one must truly read both this thread and the one about buying an ebook at Chapters to get the complete picture. He says he lives all over the world, loves to travel. I hope he is telling the truth.

I have seen some video reviews of this new ereader, but I failed to see a pictures folder or application. I really love putting my book cover art on my current ereader and using those as screen savers. I like my current ereader, but looking at future alternatives since my current one may be discontinued here in the USA.

the default image in the epub/mobi is what gets displayed.
when the device sleeps or powers down it shows the image of the last book you are reading on the screen with a percentage of how much you've read that particular book.

you can also sort the books as images.

you can add new images to the books using calibre to change up a newer cover or to one you made yourself.

there is no pictures folder, but you can upload jpg's and they'll display in the documents tab. not sure if they'll be used as a screensaver, there really is no need as there is no backlight burning the screen after prolonged usage.

You are comparing oranges and bananas. And Hermes, if you are planning on developing a big library, you may want a reader that takes an SD card--the Sony 350 does not.

Maybe you should take another look.
OK, so I missed that mention of help line. Five lashes.

Regarding SD card, this is also a positive feature of the Kobo touch.

Curious to hear that the non-touch Kobo has no ghosting.

Good points but I disagree partly

I know this is rude, but when a person tries something in the store for a few minutes--and if it is like most store models, not necessarily one that has the update applied--misses some of the features (ummm no bookmarking), misstates other things (ummm phone support) and pays very little attention to the differences that have to do with the technolgy behind touch screen/no touch screen or notice the sd card/no sd card, then in my not so humble opinion, he should get more familiar with what he held in his hand before writing a review.

Really, Really? What does that have to do with the kobo ereader? If it was made out of cow leather would it be a problem for someone, or if it is synthetic doesnt that tick off the environmentalists?

Sorry this is a bogus post Herme's is trolling
What it has to do with the Kobo reader is that Chapters (the first store in Canada to sell this new model, no?) has a selection of sleeves. Actually, they look quite smart. I almost bought the bright red one - all have a wee bit of padding inside too.

And yes, if it was cow leather (and maybe even pig leather) the policies of many a Hindu Temple would require me to leave my canvass bag at the door if the ereader were inside it. My point is that a significant percentage of the population in Canada is either Hindu, Sikh, Muslim, vegan, vegetarian etc and I was surprised that a non-leather alternative was not offered at say $12 instead of $35. And as for environmentalists being upset at using petroleum product (?) materials there is always good old canvass hemp.

Am I a troll? All I remember about Trolls is those ugly midget dolls with long red hair sold in the sixties or eventies - the creatures that according to Scandinavian mythology lived under bridges. I usually don't reply to rude or hysterical posts, preferring to read them and laugh privately.

OK I was respectful at first but you are getting a bit out of hand now. Yes the roots cases sold by Chapters are made of leather as are many other goods in Canada and around the world. If you walk into a roots store you will notice their supply of leather wallets, accessories, and other goods it's one of the things that roots is known for. Leather good don't offend most hindus, vegans, muslims or others in fact I have a muslim co worker who handles the leather goods on a regular basis. However, the chapters I bought my Kobo in hand both a Roots sleeve and a book cover made from synthetic leather present to be purchased so they did make non leather covers. The price is a non issue they can charge whatever they want you can pay it or not pay it that's up to you. The whole temple thing you bring up is ridiculous. You could take the reader out of the case at worst and leave the case in your bag by the door and solve the issue that way since no leather would be entering the temple. If you have nothing constructive or interesting to post Hermes then please just go away quietly rather than defending your odd views of life and reality and distracting everyone from the real conversation going on here.

Eh, I think Hermes' point about pig/cow-skin leather cases is a valid concern for the pious or vegetarians, but I don't get how it translates to valid criticism of the Kobo Touch. It doesn't. At most, it could be a criticism of Chapters, and even then -- it's a free market, just get another case. It's expensive? Get another case. I plan to get a sleeve or case from eBay, where KT accessories are already popping up.

(Although I'm assuming the point that Hermes made in his original post about pig-skin leather cases offending Hindus is a hasty error. AFAIK, Hinduism has no issue with pigs and pig-related products, putting aside personal and Islamic-influenced cultural preferences.)

If you're interested in a Sony and don't mind waiting, Hermes, you could try waiting until later in the year, to see if Sony releases their rumoured upgraded models. Of course, they might not and all that waiting becomes a waste.

From Wikipedia:" In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory[citation needed], extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion"

So no I wasnt implying that you are a small plastic redheaded doll or that you live under a bridge but I was certainly suggesting that you meet the above definition.

And please feel free to not reply and to laugh privately... the forum will be better for it!

The ghosting is an artifact of the e-Ink technology and appears to be caused by the ability to "preload" multiple pages of the book at one time. It would appear that currently Kobo loads 6 pages, but there are plans to make the number of pages "cached" this way user controllable.

as I understand it the eink works very much like one of those magnetic kids toys where you draw with a magnet and the filings under the screen stick to the screen to make a picture. when you clear the picture you shake the screen. With eink the pixles have two poles one pole is grey the other black when the current goes through the screen it forms the image by turning the appropiate pixles black and leaving the others grey. The ghosting (a minor issue for me as I dint notice much at all when I was playing with the display unit) is kind of like doing a partial shake on the kids toy and the full refress is like doing a thoughough shake. the full refresh puts all the pixles to grey and then the appropriate ones to black?

Had a look at the new Kobo touch in Vancouver(Robson St.), and I'm not really that impressed. I was hoping that there would be line spacing and margin size controls, the two store clerks were utterly clueless when I brought up these issues. Didn't even understand what line spacing and margin size even meant. I think that B&N's new e-ink nook looks like a better choice, with it's ability to control the look of text in it's text-dialog box.

So, are you planning on driving over the border to get it? It's not sold in Canada, as you probably know.
