It's sad to stop a series you loved, but an author only gets so many "freebies" before I give up on them. |

Tyrion and Arya are great, but Brienne is a bore. Jaime is a much better character (from Storm of Swords onward). Jon Snow, one of my previously favorite characters, was a big letdown after being made Lord Commander.

Brienne is a bore, but she is my favourite bore. I agree about Jaime and Jon Snow.

Sad as it may sound, I have to keep buying the newest James Bond novel. I have read ALL of them since Ian Fleming passed in 1964. I am a James Bond fan. However no one can compare to the original. I am compelled to read each new author that trys to honor the Fleming tradition. Sadly the last two have been the worst I have come across. Is it me because I have read so many and have a sense of what the character should be or is it the authors that try to be Fleming and just don't get it?

Examples: Robert Aspirin, Frank Herbert, H. Beam Piper, Marion Zimmer Bradley, Andre Norton Even if the new author does a good job, knowing the original author is dead and never got to complete their vision kind of ruins the mood. Plus, with something like James Bond, I think that not being from the same era as Ian Fleming makes it hard to get that same feel. Last edited by Harper Kingsley; 06-15-2011 at 01:54 AM. I was a series sheep, but Patricia Cornwell bored me to tears, Katy Reichs similar so I have given up buying these. The great thing with the Kindle is the freebies has meant that I can dip in and try other genres and authors without too much risk instead of relying on old favourites

I'm pretty well hooked on Jim Butcher's Dresden Files although it's the only series I'm currently following.
I've always loved The Guardians of the Flame by Joel Rosenberg but I gave up after book 5. He killed off the main character in book 4 and then completely changed from 4 books of 3rd person narrative to 1st person narrative from one of the the other characters. A little too jarring for me I guess. And since he died before finishing the series...I'm hesitant to pick up Game of Thrones. My wife hates me for it, but I refuse to start it until the final book is announced. I rarely pick up series that aren't finished. Of course, I'm the same way with comic books as well. |

Ooh, the GRRM, Robert Jordan thing made me think... Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series. I *loved* Wizard's First Rule. Then each succeeding book just turned me off more and more until I didn't want anymore.
Also, David Feintuch. Liked "The Still," hated "The King." The main character was just starting to become fairly human, then he completely reverted into being a gigantic turd. Or the Rune Master (?) series. Made it through the first book, then halfway through the second I practically flung it across the room away from me because I just got a giant case of the creepies. |

Sorry, should have been more specific - Joel Rosenberg passed away recently, he was the one I was referring to. Since he passed away before finishing his series I worry about picking up another series and having the same thing happen.

One of my favourite tricks on the tube in London, was to read a book on forensic anthropology or time of death calculations with full colour gruesome pictures in...........certainly stopped folk reading over my shoulder |

I have to admit that I am a bit of a sucker for series, even though I may think that they sometimes seem to lose the plot somewhere along the line.
Thankfully, the next year or so should see the end of the Wheel Of Time series and Thomas Covenant's chronicles. I have invested so much time and effort in both of these series that I deserve to know how they end up! |
