Kindle owners like to bather on about the fact that there are "jus hudreds and hudreds" of books stores were you can buy "praticly anythin you want" in MOBI format without DRM, assuming that you don't want to do business with Amazon, but this is a silly stupid lie.

If not a stupid lie, then tell me all the Stores selling Harper Collins, Doubleday, Picket, Penguin, Scribners or ANY other mainstream publishers titles, for mainstream authors like Tom Clancy, Dean Koontz, Stephen King, John Grisham, Lee Child, James Patterson, etc, WITHOUT DRM.

If you own a Nook, you can buy books published by EVERY SINGLE ONE of the above publishers, from EVERY SINGLE ONE of the above authors, from AT LEAST FIVE DIFFERENT MAJOR ONLINE BOOKSTORES, B&N, Sony, Borders, Google, and Kobo (just to name a few, there may be others); Then you can very easily sideload these books onto a Nook WITHOUT REMOVING THE DRM.

If you own a Kindle, ANY KIND OF KINDLE, so far as I know, for ALL of the above listed publishers and authors (as well as 98 percent of the current mainstream books) you are only able to buy from ONE SOURCE WITHOUT REMOVING DRM - and that source is AMAZON.

Please! Stop with this "Kindle is really just as good" stuff, you're killing me!

well said that does always crack me up when Kindle fans always chime in to disprove that you are not "locked in" to Amazon's bookstore by saying it accepts Mobi and there are hundreds of places to get mobi. So technically they are correct, LOL

Then go and read the fine print, what the kindle fans do not tell the unsuspecting would be future ereader buyers, is that these mobi books are either out of copyright books that pretty much anyone can get for free or they are off the radar self publishers or indi books ( not that there is anything wrong with that per say, I myself enjoy them) but good luck if you are a Stephen king fan, a Nora Robert's fan, so on and so on. .

ahhh that old tired argument went out with the Bush Administration, and Apple entered the game last year. Amazon no longer has that nice price advantage it once did and hasn't for quite awhile now. It might on occassion have it for a day or two but BN and Kobo matches it pretty quickly.

But what I will do is enjoy using my Kobo coupons all the time and have REAL savings on my ePub books.

For 99.99 percent of the books from authors that people really bother to read, B&N and the others match Amazon title for title.

And as far as prices go; Most of the publishers now lock in the minimum price that can be listed, so there is little or no difference in the base price.

BUT - as someone has already pointed out - stores DO run promotional offers, LOTS of promotional offers, so it stands to reason that having access to FIVE major book stores is better than ONE.

oh if this is the case, then nook seems the way to go. i'm glad i have a big pearl screen reader which hasn't been matched by any other mainstream brand, yet. i would still argue that the amazon as well as its 3g buying experience is probably leagues better than bn, but i wouldn't know. looking at the bn site, it does seem that way.

the new nook simple touch is pretty cool, as well as the nook color. if the nook color was out when i bought my reader, i might've gotten that instead. got the dx when it came out. probably better off with e-ink.

if bn made a full size keyboard for the color, that would be awesome.

Kindle cannot read ePub books, period. But Nook Touch cannot read mobi formats either, not outside of an Android app. like Kindle for Android.

The point is, Kindle users are not locked! The device uses mobi, Nook uses ePub, that's the main difference. There a tons of online bookstores where we can download mobi books without buying from Amazon. And if the book is DRM free, it can be converted via Calibre to mobi and we can also download and read ePub books via conversion. I don't see how a Kindle's user can be locked that way.

There is no such thing like the "best" ereader, but it's kind of silly keep pushing and putting ePub as the last goal for freedom. Without DRM, Kindle users can read whatever we want, even from others formats converting via Calibre, and would be the same for Nook. Running Kindle app won't allow the Nook Touch reading a mobi ebook natively, you will be reading because the Kindle app. Still you have to convert into ePub if you want to read it outside of Kindle app.

Don't root a Nook Touch in order to enjoy a Kindle ... buy a Kindle reader and that's it.

If the other store is so good, why people install the Kindle app anyway? We don't need other sources, we're happy with Amazon's selection.

I had to reset it to get it to work properly.

I am experiencing both issues: ghosting of letters and fuzzy/uneven text. It really is disappointing since, compared with the Kindle, it is much harder to read.

found this in another thread. if the str has ghosting issues it may be better to avoid it altogether

Not totally correct.

If I buy from B&N I pay taxes here in Texas. If I buy from Amazon, I do not. So the listed price can be the same, but you end paying more if you buy a B&N ebook. Now, imagine you are buying several expensive books, now that difference gets bigger and at the end of the year you probably have paid hundreds of dollars only in taxes, which is not true for Kindle users.

An interesting thread about it: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=60110

When you buy from BN you are locked into the BN DRM too because the BN DRM is a special version that can't run on Kobo or Sony, or basically ADE. Some devices like Pandigital license BN drm. Kobo (and Sony) are the open ones. Kobo has truly declared itself to be open. Any of Kobo's or Sony's ebooks can be opened on Kobo, Sony, or Nook.

You know what? All e-readers work. I have a Nook1 & Kindle3 & a Sony350. I bought the Kindle a year ago because the selection was bigger & I found prices on some books cheaper. Not so anymore. So I think you choose the reader you are most comfortable with & then enjoy reading. We all have our preferences. Some like buttons, some like touch & some like having both options. Some prefer shopping at Amazon, some at B&N & some at a variety of other stores. I like being able to shop at a variety, but have shopped at B&N & Amazon also.

Yes, that was my experience, but I think this may be because either Sony had older Pearl screen stock, and the newer Pearl screens are just flat out better, or because they weren't setting high enough in-house standards for which Pearl screes they would accept, and how good those screens would have to look when installed and tweaked for actual use in the readers.

Either way Sony seems to have fixed this issue in some of their recently shipped devices, which apparently are looking just as good as anything out there, as long as you allow for their lighter weight fonts (which still bug some folks, and can be changed on all the Nooks and Kobos now).

Even if they have improved their screen contrast on some recently shipped units, I think it's good to keep them on notice though that we WILL be watching, and will notice if they don't maintain their new standards . . .
