Pretty much apparently it depends on where you are. And whether you see readers in the wild or not probably isn't a reliable indicator. I take my Sony everywhere if I think I'm going to even have a few minutes to read, but I've never seen another reader of any brand in town. However, people will see mine and say, "Oh, I have a (insert brand here) at home." I'm in north central Illinois (rural area) so there is no public transportation. I can see a difference in the attitudes from two years ago when I got my first reader....at that time no one had seen one and didn't know what they were, so I got a lot of questions when I'd pull mine out. Now I get more questions about the cover (Oberon) than the device.
In the after-coverage for Printer's Row Lit Fest (sponsored by the Chicago Tribune) last year, one of the columnists noted that "there wasn't a Kindle in sight". Well, this year I saw a couple of them, in addition to my own Sony. Although everyone I've asked to sign it (authors I mean) invariably mention that it's their first electronic signing, they all know what the device IS. |

I saw a Kindle once when I was visiting a gym. However, I've never seen an e-reader in the wild in my neighborhood. I don't really see too many people reading books in my neighborhood (this includes the library). So I imagine most people in my immediate neighborhood have very little use for dedicated e-readers. What I have seen a lot of are iPads and tablets. That's not surprising to me. |

Perhaps you do need to see the sex in the wild before you could begin to call it popular. ![]() |

There even are a couple of dance clubs (hetero) where everyone is doing everything with one another, dancing included, but far more sex is going on on the dance floor as actual dancing. The girls bring little towels to sit on as almost none of them wears underwear. ![]() Now this is making the girlscouts being ready all the time looking quite lame. ![]() |

I used to bring my reader out when I knew I would be in a waiting room or such, but since getting a smartphone, I hardly see the point. The only time that I take my readers out of the house is when I'm going on a trip. Im sure there are plenty of others with similar habits, which is why their are so many in the airport. Oddly, I just saw my first Nook color, in the wild, at school last night. I was surprised at how heavy it was.

I was standing in line at chapters over the weekend and the woman in back of me, seeing that i was buying a cover for my Kobo, told me that she was buying a Kobo Touch and that she was the last hold out in her book club--that everyone else already had an eReader. She was about 50-55. I asked her how many people were in the club--she said 20 women her age.
Now, from my perspective, if 20 middle aged bookclubbing women in Red Deer, Alberta are using eReaders, then they have to be pretty much mainstream. It helps that our library recently started offering e-books and is promoting them like crazy. |
