I own both -- Sony 650 and Nook Color, and much prefer the Nook (which is a touch screen).

I have been guilty of bringing up the Nook Color myself, since both are Android based, and the capabilities of the Nook Color relate to possible future capabilities of the eInk Touch Nook. This brings up a good point though, that I think may weigh in B&N's favor with some people, which is that B&N now has both a Android based Touch Screen eInk device -AND- a Android based touch screen TFT LCD tablet device. I know several folks who actually prefer to use a backlit LCD tablet for reading indoors, especially with magazines or other periodicals, and to also have an eInk device for reading outdoors. One solution would be a thin lightweight 'flippy tablet' with an eInk screen on one side, and a backlit LCD screen on the other side, and although these combo LCD/eInk devices are starting to hit the market, neither B&N, Sony, Amazon, or Kobo offer such a device. For now, the best you can do, is to have a nice high resolution LCD tablet for indoors, plus a nice compact eInk reader for when you are outdoors (or for when you are traveling, and want a lighter weight, smaller device). Obviously, buying both devices from one supplier will simplify transferring purchased books and syncing the two readers when switching back and forth. If B&N can get the eInk and Color Touch Nooks to sync together seamlessly (including all the esoteric stuff like notes and bookmarks), and can make the book-reader Apps as similar as possible between the two devices, they will have something that no one else currently offers. I haven't made it all the way through the thread yet, so I'll just hope at this point that the discussion in still on topic.
I just purchased the Nook STR last week after using the Sony 600 for awhile now. I know that any comparison of the two is really moot since the 650 was supposedly such a huge improvement in screen quality and touch screen technology from the 600, but given that these are the two I have to compare, I am more than satisfied with my decision to go with the Nook. The features that I am losing by using the Nook over the 600 are features that I never used anyway to be honest. I'll use my mp3 player for music and audio books, it fits in my pocket so I can putz around while listening. I never really made handwritten notes in the margins of my books, there were times I wanted to but found that the margin space would not allow it and if I went into the note feature to make a note instead, I tended to type it out so it would be more legible, which I can still do with the Nook. The things that the Nook does have are huge pluses for me. I appreciate the fact that the font size I have chosen remains the same accross books rather than having to resize with every new book as I did on the Sony. The Nook weighs less and fits in my hand much better and the page turn buttons are in a much better place (keep in mind that I found the swipe feature on the 600 annoying and so never used it, that feature may well have been improved on the 650). So far, the Nook is playing much nicer with my computer and ADE than the Sony ever did when transferring library books, and even though I originally stated that I didn't care about wi fi availability, I'm finding that I do appreciate having it more than I thought. One thing is for certain, B&N will get more of my money simply because they've made it easier for me to make purchases, though I'm not sure if that is a good thing or not! Overall, the features I gained when combined with the cost savings win out over the features that I lost and so far haven't missed at all. I will admit that I might have felt differently if I had owned the 650, the improvement in screen clarity and the touch screen played a large role in my decision. |

I was at B&N yesterday and had a chance to look at the new Nook Touch. In my opinion, t is a much improved device from the original Nook. I'm not in the market as I'm pretty happy with my iPad and iPhone as readers, but if I were I would be interested in it. Much clearer screen, long battery life, the touch screen makes operating it easier. The only downside is that I'm a big fan of the Kindle apps on my other devices. I will be glad when all readers share the same software.

Well, I was weighing toward the nook because of the wi-fi, processor, and seller (B&N). However I looked at it online, and I didn't care for the design of it too much despite B&N's CEO's heartbreaking smile.
However, I think the sonys look awful, too. At the end of the day, neither the nook nor the sony have free 3g or direct access to the best ebook store. However, I think I would definitely go for the nook. I think it does look better, is probably designed better for the reader, and is made by a company that cares more about books. I'd much rather support B&N, whose stores are quite nice, than sony. |

Sorry for triple posting, but I have become aware that the nook has access to Google Books. I think that's amazing. If the kindle or the sony don't have access to that, then definitely go with the nook.
