Now I'm really confused. Did she do more than one series of books based on religion?

Edit: just seen you next post C. Yes, it was the Christ the Lord series. Didn't know there was more...

Christ The Lord was two books about the life of Christ. The Seraphim books (3?) were about a hitman who got in with some angels or something.

Wise.
I came onboard when I got the WAR OF HONOR HC with the bound-in CD and ran through the series to date, minus the antholgies.
The latter volumes I've read as released, which, considering the overlap from the attempts to make the TORCH and TALBOT sidebars stand alone means I've avoided the instant rehash dreariness that reading them back to back would inflict on you.
I suspect a lot of the folks turned off by the current arc in the series are trying to read the six volumes to date back to back.
I suspect that at some point Weber and Flint are going to have to edit the concurrent stories into single Omnibus editions minus the duplicate material but that isn't likely any time soon.
Also, one advantage of time off in between the books is the fun speculation of where Weber is taking the series and watching the clues pile up.

I read the Spenser books in order and really enjoyed them initially. But I felt that each one was a little worse than the one before.

I gave up at about book #10 after two consecutive books I was unimpressed with.

True. I was just too impatient. I've since learned to allow myself time to digest a book before rushing into the next one. Sometimes, though, I just can't help myself!
I've amassed quite a few short stories over the last few months, and I'm sure I'll find more, so that should help me take a breath and cleanse the palate.

I always thought that Rice's turn to religion was a combination of the familiar turning to religion when a loved one becomes ill (her husband's cancer and his death) and personal illness strikes, and a shrewd jump on the growing Christian fiction market bandwagon.

Since that market didn't accept her with wide open arms and accept her previous work on her terms, she seems to have redefined her beliefs and dismissed organized religion and its labels, ditched New Orleans and is in the process of reinventing herself.

^ Hmmm, this is very interesting. Now that you mention it, I do recall reading something about the issues with her family. Terrible.

In retrospect, this makes perfect sense as to why I became turned off with her efforts during this period, as I am agnostic.

I do wish her luck in all areas - first 4 Vampire books remain personal all-time faves.

Thanks for the info,

I have no problem dropping a series if it goes south or loses interest for me.

A lot of times it isn't even that it goes south but my interests change over time. I'm not really into urban fantasies with lots of supernatural sex these days so I've just dropped Laurell K. Hamilton's Merry Gentry series, for example.

GRRM is another case in point. It was too many years between books. I think I've forgotten most of the characters and plot by now (except what's on the HBO series!). I haven't exactly given up but I'm kind of waiting for the next one to go into the remainder bin or library shelf if you know what I mean. It's not buy-new-hardcover material anymore.

I agree whole-heartedly. I'm not even sure if its paperback buying material anymore. Aside from the length of time it has taken, book 4 was a disaster I had a hard time slugging through. The only way I'll read 5 is if it sits on top of the best seller list for say 6 months. It needs to be that good to make up for book 4. Even then I may wait it out to see if there will be a 6 and 7.

I cancelled HBO and won't watch the series either. Why watch a story that has no particular ending in sight??

Even when the plots are below par, the dialogue and characterisation is wonderful. I would read Mr. Parker until the end of time if he had lived forever, as I once exhorted him to do

If I'm disappointed in a series book, I'll get the next one from a library. If the author redeems themselves, I'll go back to purchasing. Two bad books in a row and I'm done. I gave up on the Scarpetta series when the author turned the characters into caricatures of themselves. I almost gave up on Spenser, but stuck it out. I'm hoping the new author will bring in some new life. I got tired of Spenser and Susan telling themselves how wonderful they are...

"The new Spenser novels will be written by Ace Atkins, who has written such novels as White Shadow, Infamous and Wicked City. His first Spenser novel will be releases spring of 2012."

From an article on Deadline.com, dated 2011/04/27

The Stone novels will also continue. Sunny Randall novels will not.
