I've had Canon cameras before though. My 35mm is a Canon SLR.

If you have a specialty camera store nearby, I'd suggest going there. They can most likely do in-house repairs if anything does happen to your cameras. Some even lend one out if they have to ship them to the manufacturer.

My advice is to look at the Flickr Camera Finder first, because those cameras you've mentioned seem to be very high in price for someone who's just starting out.

http://www.flickr.com/cameras/

You can look at the cameras and see what kind of pictures each of them produce.

Good luck!
well, we DO have Bestbuy, but they only sell George Foreman grills. No e-readers, no cameras, nothing worth buying. About Wolf/Ritz Camera... they're aliens.

The reason I picked Canon out, is that they have many retailers near my house. Of course a trip to some camera stores doesn't hurt. I'll take a look at Nikon cameras, D90 and D5000 are so famous and I wanna know why.

I've used Ixuses, CoolPixes and Cybershots and a Panasonic camera, but I didn't really like them. I think they were too light. The weight is something one should consider.

They are all pricey, but I think we would stick with it for a long time, so if it's worth it, I think my dear brother will happily afford.

Oh yeah, definitely the weight matters a lot. I stuck a lens on a compact PowerShot... A telephoto lens... The thing tipped over when sat on a table.

Thank you The visage series are just some digital doodles, I don't even have printouts of them. Maybe I should make some. I do have a tote bag though, but I never tried to sell them at exhibitions. How did you like your mug by the way? I've never ordered a mug from Zazzle.

There's a youngish pigeon sitting on a car outside my friends' house. It isn't a baby but judging by the downy feather it's still young. It doesn't seem hurt and it gets pissy when I tried to approach it, which I take as a good sign, but it didn't fly away either.

I guess the best thing is to wait and see if it's still there tomorrow since I haven't got a box to put it in and the bird sanctuary closed two hours ago. If it's still there tomorrow morning I'll ask my father to come by with a box and bring it to the bird sanctuary.

Errrr... if there are cats in your neighborhood it won't be there tomorrow morning. Box it up tonight - with some water if you can.

It's on a minivan so cats can't get to it easily. But I saw that it's going to rain so I called my father and he is on his way with a box. When he's here we have to discuss if it's left with me, the sanctuary is close by but I can't put it anywhere quiet with a dog and cat always next door. Or my father takes it and keep the cats out of the store so it's in a quiet environment.

Update:
When we tried to catch it glew away but couldn't make it up onto the roofs and fell down. My father caught it and we put a saucer with water in the (in which it promptly sat). We put the box in the utility room and tomorrow at 9 I'll call the sanctuary to bring it over. Tonight I'm taking the cat upstairs with me just to be safe.

To simplify, the users should be amateurs, this should be the first usable camera they use (and I would be borrowing this camera. I love photography.)

I had good experiences with Canon, plus the fact that Nikon stores in VN are nowhere to be seen and I don't want to be worried when it comes to warranty. So, Canon. I narrowed down to 2 options: which camera would you recommend: Canon EOS 500D ($670), or PowerShot G12 ($500)?

(the G12 has a preferable price, IMO. But if it doesn't work so well, my brother can afford T1i.)
A good place to look is dpreview.com. Both the cameras you mention are overkill except for a really serious amateur photographer. Perhaps a point-and-shoot would be a better bet as a first camera? In which case, how about the Canon PowerShot SD 4000 IS/IXUS 300HS (two names for same camera). It should be available for under $250.

I've been very pleased with all the Canon Digital Ixus models I've had.

After several experiences, I liked Canon G10 best, so DSLR camera is prefered. And we plan to stick with it for a long time, too. So my brother said he'd get EOS 500D.

IMO, your suggestion of SD 4000 IS sounds nice, though 3.8x zoom is too low. What about Canon IXUS 210 IS? 5x zoom should be better. When I grow up I want to have 2 cameras: one compact and one DSLR. I'll take a closer look at IXUS then.

For my it is the normal thing to do. We regularly bring birds to the sanctuary that are hurt.

The pigeon seems to be still alive, it started making hissing noises when I picked up the box to put in the hallway. In a couple of minutes I can call the bird sanctuary to make sure someone's there when I bring the bird over (it's a public holiday today).

Update:
I just brought the bird to the sanctuary, it didn't like the sound of cars driving by and got all upset. The man at the sanctuary checked the bird but there didn't seem anything physically wrong but was very subdued when being prodded and in the cage looked dazed (same as he sat on the car last night).

Each year I give my Christmas/end of year bonus to a good cause and this year I'm giving it to the sanctuary. I would volunteer but I don't think I'm capable of making the decision to have a bird euthanized when it's hurt too bad.

Pigeons don't usually leave the nest until they have their full adult feathers.
