Will Sony Be Able to Dethrone Apple?
(source: http://ereaders-foryou.com/sony-vs-apple)
Research carried out by Deutsche Bank AG says that Sony is the last out of 10 world’s leading producers on the tablet PC market. According to this survey, it might prevent the company from challenging Apple or its rival Samsung, the producer of Galaxy Tab. Sony spent too much time developing its own tablet PC. Experts say that the company should have entered this market sector last year and now it’s Sony’s last chance. However, it’s not the company’s fault. Strategy Analytics market research predicts that by 2015 the tablet PC market will reach $ 49 bln. Sony expects the global market to jump even higher, reaching the annual sales volume of 50 mln to 60 mln items in 2011 and around 70 to 80 mln. items next year. |

Specifically in the tablet space? IMO only if certain things happen:
- Apple iPads undergo some sort of crippling and widespread hardware failure/security breech/huge customer service gaffe which no amount of Cupertino spin can correct; - Sony truly embraces Android and the entire development community, avoiding completely their historical propensity for proprietary, locked-down technologies; - Sony spends enormous money on global advertising, marketing and promotion, targeting as wide a demographic as possible; - Sony employs the same unbeatable pricing strategy as they [and Microsoft reportedly] did with their console gaming systems, absorbing gigantic short term losses in order to saturate the market as much as possible; - Sony comes up with some truly unique and real-world useful features/HW specs/apps. - Sony makes sweetheart, too-good-to-turn-down-deals with global telcos and cellular service data providers. Otherwise, I kinda think its pretty much Apple's game to lose in this space at this point. But I also thought the Mets would lose the series in '86 so what the heck do I know... |
