If it is packed properly and stored in a ziploc inside w waterproof bag you would be just fine. A grizzly is going to go for your food or you before it goes for your Kindle. Personally, I think it would be fine. There are anecdotal stories of people taking Kindles winter camping and on the Appalachian Trail and the Kindles are fine. Heck, there are Kindles in war zones that are doing just fine.

I backpack/camp a lot so I tend to put my electronics to the test and moisture inside a tent probably won't be sufficient to ruin the Kindle unless it's excessive.

If you have something like a Kindle that is relatively expensive and you'll be handling a lot, a SquareTrade warranty isn't a bad idea. They have sales all the time and you can get a multi-year Kindle warranty (with accident coverage also) for $15-$20. There's a deductible for accidents (I believe) but not for normal failure. You have to order it within a month of your purchase, but it's something to keep in mind the next time you buy an electronic device that you want to take into the outdoors. The peace of mind is worth it in my opinion. |

Great info, even for a relatively seasoned techie like me. I very much am enjoying the way people present differing opinions and POVs here on MR. I personally fall on the side of "it's relatively inexpensive, will likely fare no worse outdoors than other consumer electronic devices like cell phones given some reasonable care and the ability to carry around a couple thousand books/mags/newspapers/whatever to be enjoyed out of the confines of my home is priceless to me" camp. Ahem.

I mostly read my Kindle indoors at home but when I've used it outside in sunlight it has been fine.

This is an amazing thread. I should look into Square Trade Accidental too. Last week I was planning to bring the Kindle on an impromptu canoe trip, but did not have wet bags. Canoeing ultimately did not happen, but yeah, kind of a silly idea.

I would bring it with me on a canoing trip. I have several water proof stuff sacks that go on all of our camping trips. Water proof stuff sacks are the type of thing that I think anyone who does any type of camping, car, backpacking, or whatever, should have with them. You don't know when it is going to rain so your emergency supplies should be kept in a waterproof stuff sack. Picking up one for storing electronics makes a certain amount of sense to me.
