Very true. What I was referring to is the (still hotly debated) market battle between steam powered and gasoline powered automobiles around the time of the great depression. From what I've read, the steam powered automobiles had, at that time, better efficiency, faster acceleration, etc. However, the steam auto manufacturers tried to focus on the luxury market (which essentially disappeared during the thirties), while Henry Ford and his Model T were targeting the everyman. The horrible misjudgment of the steam auto manufacturers, combined with a drought that dried up a lot of steam engine water supplies, combined with the decreasing number of horse troughs (from which steam car owners had traditionally "filled up" on water) led to a Betamax vs. VCR type situation wherein the better technology (again, it is still hotly debated what constitutes "better" in this sense- some sources say the steam powered car would have lost out eventually anyway, as gas engines were more easily made more efficient, but I digress) lost out to the lesser technology due largely to non-market forces.

The death of Betamax was Sony's refusal to allow porn to be distributed on beta. The entire home video and DVD markets are based on porn which Sony ignored. I have read this explanation in several sources enough to believe it's validity.

Ok, I don't know what this says about me, but I remember seeing porn on beta in video stores back before the beta vs VHS war was over. Ok, let me clarify, I remember seeing beta tapes that were porn tapes in video stores. I didn't watch the tapes. Uh oh, what kind of mess have I gotten myself into.

It says that you were sneaking into video stores when you were underage, an admirable trait (which I never possessed myself, as it turns out, due to poor nerves).

Some people think that the failure of betamax had nothing to do with porn:

LOL I wish. I am quite old enough to have been of age at the time.

We had a Betamax when I was a kid...it was very good, but it was doomed. I don't remember porn in Betamax, though (video store down the street from my house when I was a kid, I snuck into the back room that was behind some old western swing doors. I was a bad, bad kid.) TMI?

Very interesting reference about the porn. Wonder what the truth is? Well, anyway it's a good story!

maybe instead of status updates, they could just add a new forum category: "Speculation, rumors, and slander" since that is about all anyone is using this forum for. They obviously aren't responding to the constant whining so why do you all keep *****ing about this? It most likely won't change the course of events and whatever happens, it is a great device that works for its intended purpose.

I did a double take when reading the initial posts on this thread. The concerns about Entourage going out of business are now nearly a year old! But they're still here - and I got mine only a month or so ago. My Entourage eDGe is a great product but the lack of information, official PR, and updates can be excruciating.

I really do hope that Entourage eDGe suceeds. Is there anything else like it? I purchased one as a headmaster in hopes that it might be just the thing for use in the classroom p e-Ink literature books on one side, a wireless tablet on the other side for internet research, Google Docs, and Moodle (our open-source learning management system). If people are aware of the price of textbooks these days, I think they could see that an Entourage eDGe could be a money-saving and very versatile investment. Entourage eDGe could be HUGE in the educational/academic market if they get up a full head of steam.

Besides the dual-book features, I liked the fact that the Entourage eDGe had a place to store the stylus, an external, easily-swapped battery, the ability to link between the e-Ink and tablet sides, an external wifi power switch, to name a few off the top of my head. I think the only thing not included was some sort of GPS capability - but I wonder if the 2.2 update will have the ability to triangulate between access points which will serve as a kind of GPS.

Oh, yeah, you're a Senior Member. I didn't notice that before. Apparently vigorous posting here ages you.

As do we all. We're just not seeing any signs of life anymore.

The difference now are several troubling indicators that never existed all at once in the past:
- there's been a significant exodus of staffers in the January/February timeframe, including management, PR people, and developers
- there has not been much public activity (press releases, etc.) since late last year (other than one token one in January when we pressed them to post something)
- there've been no patches released since the one mystery PE patch (Dingo 1.13) in mid-January (usually there's at least one minor one every month or so)
- retailer inventories of the eDGe are almost completely dried up, with Amazon not even indicating "More coming soon"
- there's no indication enTourage has attended any trade shows since CES 2011 (where they didn't show any new products)

The whining will stop when the information starts. This situation is enTourage's making, not ours.

As I think I said, when you leave blank spaces, people tend to fill them in with whatever seems probable to their minds or sounds plausible,
because human beings try to find explanations for things and constantly assess reality. This is human nature.

Entourage should not be allowing so many blank spaces in the first place. I also think our blank space filling-in will cease as soon as they care to
provide a full scenario by themselves. It's Entourage's making, and I hope they will unmake it soon.
