Sometimes I wish we had an off-topic forum for posts like this, but I know that can easily turn into a nightmare.

Thank you for your good wishes which are so welcome! This was my own birthday present, but fortunately everyone at home (and they are a big bunch) seem to ne very happy with the Edge and no grudges or hard frowns about the big expenditure. I know why. They will now ask for an Edge for their birthdays and I will have to make up an excuse. Ah! I KNOW!!!! I will tell them that the Froyo update is past due---

Dr. T, thanks for posting the link to Lifehacker's site. Interesting rundown on the Androids. I especially liked the pie chart, but a big flaw in their measurement is the use of Google Market access as the yardstick. Guess that counts us out . . .

I have a lot to learn about my new PE. So different actually having it vs. reading/watching about it. I imagine as I go I will discover many things I wish it had, and many uses that will carry over to any upgrade we're lucky enough to get.

I think that "except" is the reason why we all have spent more money in an Edge. And that "250.00 'except'" may be worthwhile to those who have to read many hours a day and need to link web references into the texts, and to write comments onto the articles.

This is true enough. However, I have come to prefer using a dedicated e-reader that weights only a few ounces and lasts WEEKS if not MONTHs without a single charge, compared to using the Edge as a dumb bell free weight with a battery life of mere hours.

Instead of asking what the Android tablet offers that other tablets dont....which is silly since it is primarily a reader and a tablet second, and there is no way in **** it can compete with the Xoom or Galaxy tab....I own the Xoom, and the edge feels like a cheap toy by comparison......The real question is what the READER offers that other readers dont......Ill list a few.

1. A large screen comparable to a DX, or Pocketbook Pro 903, New Asus reader, ect.
2. Pathetic battery life.
3. Heavy weight and inconvenient size.
4. Moderate refresh rate, inferior to a Sony daily edition.
5. If there is any hyperlink functionality, I have not figured out how to use it.
6. .......? Really straining my brain here.

What the edge offers as a READER that other readers dont offer is the Tablet....even the ability to take notes, record or listen to music....other readers can do this, and do it better.

The edge cant even text-reflow PDFs like the SOny daily edition can, and that is only a 7 inch reader.

Its not as quick and responsive as the Onxy Boox, which can surf the net in E-ink, check email, play music like an ipod, has touch screens, and has more responsive notes.

I dont like the Kindle DX.....I like the touch screen of the Sony Daily edition and the Onxy Boox.....The new 10 inch Onyx Boox has the functionality of 1.6 Android, only in e-ink, and its faster and has hyperlink support and 16 shades of grayscale, high resolution, and fast.


I think a 10 inch reader, like the new asus or Onyx readers, or even just the daily edition for $260, then your Android phone.....seriously, thats the way to go.

I would have been happier with the update to Froyo, on this RESISTIVE touch screen....at least before I bought myself a Motorolla Xoom.


I now have a $600 tablet with 2 years of 3g service for $20 a month plus Wifi, and the daily edition reader for $260, and I paid way too much for my Android phone.....No, it wasnt as much of a bargain compared to the Edge. The edge might be a good budget option, but YOU REALLY DROPPED THE BALL WAITING TO RELEASE FROYO UNTIL AFTER HONEYCOMB AND TEGRA 2 WAS RELEASED.....I feel a little cheated, and now the product is already too outdated to even care if you update it.

In my opinion, dont bother upgrading to 2.2. Just let this product die. If you couldnt be bothered to upgrade while everyone else was excited about Froyo, or at least before 3.0, then dont even worry about it now.

Go back to the drawing board and release a Honeycomb device with CAPACITIVE screen technology, a PEARL e-ink screen, 3g compatibility, and make it weigh less with better battery life, and use a Tegra 2 chip.

There is no future for this device. Technology evolves too quickly to stick with the same device for years on end without upgrades when the upgrades come this slowly. You just cant compete with the big boys.....Sorry to say it.

I dont care at all about which software I have on the Edge. It is NOT a standard tablet and you dont buy it for use it like that. I just want the Edge's core applications working flawlessly. In this effort I hope, not about having the latest OS.

Those who want "to be excited about the latest OS" are the iPad kind of people and wouldnt either buy the Edge

While I agree with you to a large degree, the lack of apps as the OS gets more out of date becomes difficult.

which apps exaclty?

One example is Adobe Acrobat reader which requires Android 2.2.

repligo reader for example gives your PDF editing capabilities but requires Froyo. The are also many handwriting keyboards that I would like to try but they all require 2.1+. So there are legitimate reasons why people would want a more recent Android.

WinAmp requires 2.x...

Angry Birds requires 2.2. Sony Reader requires 2.2. I am not sure but I believe the Audibles player requires 2.2 as well (?).

I think new versions or types of the Dolphin browser (Dolphin HD?) requires 2.x...
