Read the statement from DP. It explains everything.

If Phillips makes $20 per DVD recorder they sell, vs $1 for every blank DVD, you can bet they're going to give preference to their blank DVD manufacturing if they ever have to make a choice between them.
Sadly, you've missed the point I was making entirely What the per-unit profit margin is is entirely irrelevant and I in no way intended to imply what the relative margins were. Indeed, they can be equal or reversed and my point still stands. It's the number of units sold. Secondly, it's not a DVD players vs blank DVDs analogy - it's a DVD player vs a different DVD player model analogy.

If you carefully re-read dontpanic's explanation (as I gather jsfiller just did), you'll understand that the issue is the performance drag of the larger screen. Android 2.2 works on both items, but slower on the significantly larger EE screens which requires more CPU cycles to update so many more pixels, especially for any kind of UI animations (perhaps this is something only a programmer can appreciate). It seems that enTourage has to tweak and optimize the code to more efficiently perform the screen updates.

If you carefully re-read my post you'll notice that I referenced dontpanic's warnings about reduced performance under Android 2.2, so yes, I am aware of that. If the software is as similar as you suppose, Entourage would at least be able to give EE users the option of upgrading if they were willing to risk reduced performance in return for getting access to the many apps that require 2.2 and the other benefits of 2.2.

This argument is interesting, no doubt.
But will my edge perform better and play flash video anytime in the near future?
I see apple has released a new iOS that is offering iPad users some very desirable features.

The iPad won't have Flash support until Steve Jobs dies or is fired again.

I should pop in and say that we are indeed getting closer with Froyo. It is still very buggy, but we are getting there on both platforms. The video framework of Froyo and the increased app support are going to make many of you very happy. Others will stay sad, no matter what we do. We look forward to making it more difficult for you to gripe, Chubulor, but we are not completely sure that is possible.

Thanks for the update. Making most of the people happy most of the time is a good enough goal

I had no problem letting the subject go until people started making excuses, but whatever. I'm not the only one griping about it.

There's a reason the Development forum has been getting about one comment every two weeks for the past few months. One irritable forum member doesn't cause that.

Would you be interested in letting some of us "Beta" (or Alpha) test Froyo?

I would put my name on the list (I want the extra API's).

andy.

p.s. There have been a lot of kernel/jit tweaks in the custom forums which are supposed to improve performance. Are you intending to incorporate any of those tweaks?)

I, for one, am not sad and in fact am quite happy. So if there's a need for beta testers, sign me up, too!

This is a lame excuse, if your so concerned with getting updates right , you should have done the same before you released the edge. perhaps you need to finish one system before starting on another. there are people watching to see how you handle this. so fare not so good.

Same here. Happy and waiting patiently for the update that will have Flash... That is all I need.

Flash support would make my eDGe the perfect device for me, given the way I use it--though landscape, rotatable e-ink would be a huge benefit.

While I agree that flash and rotatable eInk will be nice, the latter is useless to me until you can scroll in annotation mode and until annotation will anchor to the text.

I know the people at Entourage are working hard on this problem, though, so I am optimistic that we will see all of the eInk improvements out in the next few months!!
