Exclamation

Hi goodspeech and welcome to the land of different ebook-formats.

As far as I know the pocket eDGe natively does (like its big brother on my desk) support ".ePub" with Adobe DRM. That's not the stuff Amazon sells, they sport their own special format, called ".mobi".

You will be able to read those an your eDGe too, but not on the eInk-side I'm afraid.

You'll have to look for the .apk - file for "Kindle for Android" here in the forum or on the net and install that to your eDGe. After that you'll be able to read the Amazon-Books on the LCD (Colour) Display.

If you want to learn about ebooks have a look at www.mobileread.com.

All the best

pirx

The Kindle app for the eDGe can be downloaded from here: http://www.4shared.com/file/iJO3dpjR...nkindle-2.html (click the big blue "Download Now" button).

I downloaded the .apk file for Kindle. The book showed up in the Kindle "desktop" of my EEP. When I request to download it a second time it says I already have it. I have searched all storage and libraries and cannot find the book. I noticed that Boris indicated that I would have to download to my PC and then transfer. Since the .apk file for Amazon has been released does that still apply for Amazon? The Barnes and Noble .apk directly downloads to the EEP.

Are you saying everything is working okay?

As for the initials I think it's "PE" (Pocket eDGe), or possibly "EPE" (enTourage Pocket eDGe), while the larger version is "enTourage eDGe" ("EE"). Here in the forums people seem to have agreed on PE & EE.

BTW, I looked at the christianbooks.com site and their eBooks are in Adobe Digital Editions format. This means you can download them to your PC and then transfer them to the eDGe the same way you would for B&N books and then read them on the eInk side.

Note that if you add an ebook to the Library on the eDGe, you can then annotate (make notes on) it on the eInk side. This would be useful for bible studies.

Okay. I experimented a bit. I had originally downloaded the amazon apk from mediafire. It seemed to work but no books appeared in the menu. I redownloaded the app from the link provided above in Boris' reply and it is now working. Thanks to everyone for the support of a junior user of the PE.

I have a question about e-book formats and the eDGe.

If, as is implied in this thread, some form of DRM is required how do I use the the e-books (PDF) that I have produced (at the moment I use a netbook but it is a PITA trying to read the service manuals in the sun)? Do I have to run them through Calibre or some other program to be able to use them on the e-ink part of the eDGe?

Welcome to the forums, Ivan.

DRM (digital rights management) is something publishers stick on their books to help prevent them from being copied without limit. So, it's not that *you* require DRM, but rather that you need an app that can deal with the publisher's DRM.

If you've produced your own PDF, it almost certainly has no DRM. So, just copy it (using a USB memory stick, or an email, or an app like DropBox) to your eDGe, and open it - it will appear on the e-ink side.

Calibre is not required for this, but it's a useful app if you want to maintain the same set of ebooks on a PC and multiple devices, including the eDGe. Its core function is simply to copy the files to a device, but it also adds things like "tags", etc.

Post here again if you have any questions

Borisb, you are just a wealth of knowledge and a blessing. Being able to take notes, having my bible on it for church was my major deciding factor for purchasing the PE.

I love my PE, too, even more than my EE. It really is a terrific device

More info needed; are they DRM protected? If not you can convert with Calibre - http://calibre-ebook.com/
If they are protected then you can not change the format without finding a way to strip the DRM. But the edge reads ebub as well as PDF - which really isn't the best format for ebooks.
