how to close an application?

Being rather new in using android, I can't seem to find a way to properly close an app. For example docs 2go excel. Turning the edge off makes it complain the document wasn't closed properly.
I searched the manual and the forum.
any advise really appreciated.

Hi Mike,
The sequence is "menu button (short click) > file> close."
Don't feel bad, I forget to do his all the time. .. haven't lost anything yet.
