Speculation thread: How will Amazon react to new Nook and Kobo?

That's good to hear. If some people are finding it an issue, though, it might be as well for B&N to make it a configurable item, as it is with some other readers. That should be an easy thing to change, and would be to everyone's benefit.

I mean, the nook simple touch really isn't that much smaller than the k3 (an inch?) and not much lighter (an ounce?), either. It's not the difference between an ipad and a k2, guys...

Remember when the k3's first hit Target displays and people were complaining that it was TOO light, that people liked the weight of Sony readers or the 1st gen nook because they felt more substantial? Whatever happened to THAT sentiment?

Jeez, it's just like the lack of a user-replaceable battery thing. It's DEFINITELY not ok, and a CON when Amazon removed the ability to replace the battery by oneself, but when anyone else does it, all of a sudden people are saying what Kindle users have been saying for years now- that the battery will outlive the device and by the time it's ready to be replaced one would have already replaced their ereader.

Users of "X" reader where saying Kindle 3 was too light (obviously, "X" was heavier than Kindle 3 , lol) Now that they are planning to buy "X", or they did, they need to be consistent to what they are doing and saying ...

It is a bit funny though ... but yes, the difference between Nook Touch and Kindle 3 is not as big as Nook Touch vs Classic Nook. It is some way more comfortable to hold than Kindle 3 in my opinion, but depends of the person. My wife was excited until she actually holds one a few days ago in B&N, she said it's uncomfortable when holding that it's too small for her.

Ok, here's something I like about the K3, w/ the keyboard. If I'm reading at night in bed, the extra space (inch) created by the keyboard at the bottom nicely raises the screen up an extra inch for better viewing. Anyone else read in bed w/ the ereader on their tummy?

On most nights, yes. Propped up on a throw pillow, it's one of my favorite ways to read.

I notice ghosting on mine frequently when I read in bright daylight, not necessarily in direct sunlight, but next to a window. If it's darker or I am using a lamp, I don't see it. I'd like to hear from people who actually own one and not just play with it at the store for 5minutes

I have 5" device PocketBook 360°
There is BIG difference. I can put PB360 in a pocket. Even in my back pocket when I am wearing jeans.

I read with it propped against the headboard sometimes, and the bit of extra height is good there.

The K3 is already too small and slim for me to read comfortably without its book-style cover. Otherwise it feels like I'm reading off a graphing calculator.

i am surprised that few people are mentioning one of the most important aspects (for me).
Content & Convenience - that's the killer argument for me.

if i know that i can get _most_ of the books that i want to read on Amazon (without spending time with DRM/format/whatever fixing), i am willing to pay more and give up some of the other features.

having tried different plaforms, at the moment amazon/kindle is THE place where i can get really most of the stuff that i want.

there's maybe 5% of the books i want, not available on kindle. for the other platforms, it's 50%.

Sony used the IR touch and Pearl long before B&N or Kobo. So please, get your facts correct before spouting junk that isn't correct.

Competition is a great thing for the consumer.

The one thing Amazon has going for it that will both hurt and help Amazon is customer lock-in. Amazon has locked in customers with their DRMed eBooks and for those that do not strip/convert, if they move away from Amazon, they will lose all the eBooks purchased via Amazon. So really, you may very well have people pissed at Amazon when they want to leave and others will just stick with the Kindle they already have because it's either that or lose their eBooks. Some will upgrade because they feel Amazon is good and will want to stick with them. But I think a lot of people will see the light and be pissed.

The real question is size. Touch gets rid of the physical keyboard.

Personally, I prefer touch to buttons. I have both, & find myself trying to do stuff on my Kindle by touch.

Once you go IR touch, you find it not so nice to be forced to use physical buttons and you do find yourself trying to touch/tap/swipe the screen when it cannot do so. So yes, IR touch is needed to keep the Kindle in the 21st century.

The new Kobo is not yet released. So it cannot yet be talked about by owners as nobody yet owns one.

I disagree. I do feel that Amazon will go bye-bye if they do not go touch. They will be seen as lagging and behind the times and reviewers will say so and people will just go with a touch model and there goes Amazon.
