I always thought it was a statue of, well, the Emperor. Why would there be a statue of Xizor? He was the head of a (admittedly large) criminal organization, but would that warrant a statue (and would the Emperor allow that)? Makes no sense to me. Good reason to rewatch RotJ again sometime!

I definitely remember the big Shadows of the Empire event. Had the novel, the comics (and the sequel series about Guri), trading cards, and the soundtrack, which I've probably played as often as the original movies' OSTs. Fun!

Apparently my memory is not cooperating with me. I just looked it up and it was a statue of the Emperor. I swear I had read somewhere it was Xizor....anway, apparently an action figure of xizor (among others) was used as a prop for the background spectators of the pod race in Episode 1.

I'm going to be quiet now as to not spread any more mis-information

But when I go to the book page on amazon.com, it says the book is not available to customers in Europe. I checked last week, and it said so back then already, too. I can NOT buy this book, even though clearly I did this morning (paid for it, too, ha). There is no Buy button on the page for me, no pricing info etc.
Side effect of Random House going agency earlier this year - you ordered before they changed.

Oh... Guess I should read up on that.
Sure hope that doesn't mean I won't be able to buy any new SW e-books, though. Considering the fact they're pretty much the only e-books I buy/read! (I'm mainly a fanfiction reader.)

edited to add: Well, that doesn't look too good for me, then. I pre-ordered Ascension (the next FotJ novel) back in January, too, and that one is still in my orders list, but when I go to the Kindle store, I cannot buy it. So maybe that order will be okay, like with Conviction, but any future book released after Ascension could be a serious problem. And to think, the main reason I bought a Kindle and not one of the many e-books readers available in my home country (Holland) is because I'd have access to the new SW novels. Geez.

At least fanfic can keep you in material for a life time or two!

But I did not know that Agency pricing impacted availability. I thought it only affected price. How's that work?

What does agency pricing have to do with geographic availability?

Good point. Though fact is, when the switch to agency model happened in the UK, French people where locked out of the e-book site there.

since it's about SW books - I never read a single one. Yesterday tried to find the Thrawn trilogy anywhere (not interested in torrents or whatever it is, guessing illegal) anyhow, with which book do I start? there are gazillions of them

Will thrawn trilogy do for starters?

It'll do great for starters, but it's part of the releases due out June 28th.

I don't know where you'd get that idea.

That's the best place to start IMO.

Those are the ones that really launched the whole expanded universe (although there were a few other books years earlier by Alan Dean Foster, Brian Daley & L. Neil Smith).

You know, I didn't realize until you put them in the same sentence how big a role Star Wars has played in my SF tastes over the past few decades.

I just realized that Foster is one of my least favorite SF writers, and Daley is one of my most favorite.
I first came to dislike Foster because of the original novelization of Star Wars, and I first came to like Daley because of the Star Wars radio plays.

I agree. I think the only question is when.
Some would say it was right after Thrawn.

Others might say it wasn't until the special crossover story, where Han and Fonzie waterskied over the....no, wait...I'm still writing that one.

Seriously, as I said I am decades behind, but I feel they jumped when they started coming out too fast for me to keep up with them.

Are there any particular gems among the most recent novels?

(in other words, we know where to start reading...where should we stop? )

They are doing it so they can charge hardcover pricing for the eBook.

The agency model did not just bring in increased pricing but also geo-restrictions.
